What do all you people think teachers, social workers etc do for child care? Don't you realize that most people in queens, bronx etc. make mid 5 figure salaries? Do you think all of their kids are in bad child care situations? No. They are will loving neighborhood ladies who charge $100-$200 wk. [ Reply | More ]

I was one of the moms using those kinds of ladies to sit, but I do recognize that better ones charged more. For that money, you don't get anyone who's particularly attentive, creative, or does playdates, etc. She allows the child to remain in her setting, under her rules, and doesn't really go out of her way to make the place an ideal situation for children necessarily. So if her teens are playing Halo3 and the baby is plopped down there too, no big deal. [ Reply | More ]

and no one is licensed for a reason there. If uncle Joe, the occasional child molester wants to come by and have a beer with his sister who's watching your kid, it's all cool. No employees are fingerprinted, you have no guarantee that no one has had any problems wiht the law, or smokes pot around your kids, etc. [ Reply | More ]

You're paying less than $4 an hour, and since the federal minimum wage is $5.85 an hour, you should think about that. [ Reply | More ]

If you're paying significantly below the federal minimum wage, which is itself way too low, you are in fact taking advantage of someone. [ Reply | More ]

This is probably a home day care, not a nanny coming to her house. But either way, it is obviously in a neighborhood where this is the going rate. And it is the going rate b/c it's what people in the neighborhood can pay. Do you honestly believe that all working class people have crappy childcare? [ Reply | More ]

I am not concerned about the quality of the child care, I'm concerned that someone is paying about half of federal minimum wage. NY minimum wage is $7.15/hr [ Reply | More ]

If it's an at home day care with 4 kids, the lady is making $520 cash/wk. That is well above min. wage. [ Reply | More ]

Of course not, but the only person I know who pays something similar complains because all the babysitter does is turn on the TV for the kids all day. There's not much incentive to do more. [ Reply | More ]

np: Her db might be safe but in my experience with co-workers who live in poorer areas and use in-home day care, its usually older women who watch a few kids and basically sit them in front of the TV. They are safe and the care givers are loving but not engaging the children the way I think most of us would want. But hay, you do what you have to do. [ Reply | More ]

I think the people responding to this post live in a very small world. What do all of you think nanny's with children pay for child care? An at home daycare in many parts of the outerbouroughs will be around $150/wk. That's what my nanny paid. And when her dd was old enough for pre-k she went to the YMCA in Flatbush where the UPK part was free and she paid on a sliding scale for the rest of the day (11:30 to 6pm, lunch included) and I think it came to $200/wk. She learned to read and write in that program, they had her tested on site for G&T and she is now getting all 4s in her G&T 2nd grade class. Just b/c it's not manhattan rates doesn't mean it's bad. NYC is made up of lots of different economies. [ Reply | More ]

If OP is paying someone to come watch her kids for $130 for a 40 hour week, its not an issue of Manhattan rates, its an issue of being too low to be legal, let alone fair, in any part of the United States. [ Reply | More ]

my guess is that it is an at home daycare. But FYI, my best friend lives in a border city in Texas and pays $220/wk to her live-in who takes care of 3 kids and cleans the whole house. And my friend tells me she pays more than anyone else she knows in her city. [ Reply | More ]

McAllen: "The median income for a household in the city was $33,641, and the median income for a family was $36,050. Males had a median income of $30,089 versus $22,480 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,939. About 20.9% of families and 23.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.5% of those under age 18 and 20.3% of those age 65 or over." That ain't park slope baby. [ Reply | More ]

what is the child/caregiver ratio? what is the age range of children? i think 130/week is troublingly low, but if you do the research and feel comfortable, then do what is best for you. i pay $200 a week but it's only for 8 hours total. the place is a total dump, but the care is phenomenal/excellent and my kid is thriving there. so to each their own.
