OP: I'm so sorry if I offended anyone. I'm very confused as to what is so offensive about my post. I'm concerned about the situation of having my child in the same exact class with the same 25 kids for so many years. Why is that odd? in zoned public or most privates you get a bigger variety of personalities. Thinking that the class will be very girl heavy and probably low in minority students. Not a great situation (potentially) for my kid. [ Reply | More ]

it is a great school with many many very smart kids. the families are typically MC/UMC, but laid back and very nice. everyone contributes. the kids do amazing things. even in a class of 25, there is enough mix of personalities and interests that the average kid will not want to leave the group and mix with another class anyway...until many years later. relax and congrats! In the Bronx, not NYC. Raised in England, in the countryside. We are about to move to CT, and I know I'll be sad, have been here almost 20 years. But am so over all the aggressive, ghetto, hyper-competitive nonsense that goes with living here. Want to return to a simpler life, with a garden for the kids, and normal people living around me. ONe of the most important quality of life factors for us in chosing to remain in the city is time for my dcs to be with their father. His commute door-to-door is negligible; we have family dinner quite often (which becoem even more important as you child gets older and we can all discuss our day and challenges and successes, etc). He rarely misses a school event as it requires only a small portion of the day and can volunteer in the class room. This is invaluable. BTW, dcs are now 6 and 9. I also fetl that move to the burbs meant an end to my career: I thought that 2 peoplw working and commuting was impossible. I chose to stop working when dc was almost 1, but my location was not the reason I did so.... [ Reply | More ]

SAHM w/4 y/o DD, UWS. It's like raising DCs anywhere. There are good days and bad days, great things about living here and PITA things about living here. I love being able to take DD to a playground and letting her find DCs to play with - some she already knows and some she does not; having AMNH as a rainy-day activity is also wonderful. Pre-school admissions weren't so bad, at least not for us, but I'm not looking forward to K next year. I wish I had more storage space, but otherwise I love my apartment (and being forced to edit/limit possessions and purchases isn't all bad). It is what you make of it. [ Reply | More ]

Just went through K process this year. Toured Ethical and Friends, but didn't apply. Applied to Horace Mann. It wasn't for our dc (and dc didn't get in), but HM's application process only involves one visit (about 2 hours total). I thought that was very considerate for working parents, given that many of the schools required 3 or more separate appointments. You should tour and decide what you like for your dc -- the personalities of the schools really do come through on the tours/interviews. [ Reply | More ]
