282 is an exellent school and getting better. The g&t programs are basically the same everywhere. You saved yourself 20 hrs/week in commute. I am not zoned for 282 but would do it in a second had it been an option. Congrats! [ Reply | More ]

Are you already in at Brooklyn New School. I would take that, and I've done a lot of thinking about 282, which is my zoned school, and think that given the principal/attitude of administration, it has a long way to go. Or, put another way, it can only change/improve that much. [ Reply | More ]

I have a choice of 282 G&T and toured BNS. Would not send my kid to BNS and did not returen the form for the waiting list. I am seriously considering sending my DD to 282 - despite what I hear about the administration. Its 282 or private school. [ Reply | More ]

We liked the school a lot -- quite impressive, great G&T K class it seemed, plus music and art solid. Much more impressed than BNS, but no diversity. Plus it's becoming K-8 next year (starting with new 6th grade class). We're fretting. [ Reply | More ]

Very obsessed about test scores here, to keep up their numbers - teachers, admin, families. Mothers involved with school can be insane, no different than in NYC. People in the community act like the school is the ultimate expression of their own identity (as are all the sports teams, and I'm talking about 2nd graders!). [ Reply | More ]

IT is exactly the oposite of the UK, when I was applying. Private schools and southern schools were preferred. This make me want a great school, but I am not keen on the things that go along with it (little diversity, pushy parents, pressure). Maybe we should go for the town we like. [ Reply | More ]

OP: and youthink a NYC HS would be any different? I didn't mean that to be snarky - just honest. I was engaging in drug experimentation and having sex while I was in my urban NYC school. I still went to an Ivy league school and am doing fine - althoughwho knows what happened to some of the burnouts I used to hang with, when i wasn't hnaging out with the AP kids. i think it is probably the same anywhere. I'm not talking about drugs, sex, etc. I am talking about mean-spirited conspicuous consumption: teenagers not only driving nicer cars than their teachers, but bumping/ramming their teachers cars because they know they can get away with it. Teens torturing those in their classes who are slightly less affluent than the norm. Things like that. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, and I always do, I never really got a chance to know my father (died when I was an adolescent, after a long battle) but I sure wish he was around to meet DH and DC. F-day always makes me appreciate my FIL, who is sometimes a PITA but it's nice to sort of have a dad guy around, and he's a wonderful grandpa. [ Reply | More ]

i don't speak to my father because of abuse from when I was a child. I don't really think about him on most days, and today is really just another day. I don't make a big deal out of these sorts of days, but I make sure that dh knows we appreciate him (though I do that on other days too). [ Reply | More ]
