Well, we are discovering different - but also awful - facets of our "top" new suburban district. [ Reply | More ]

Very obsessed about test scores here, to keep up their numbers - teachers, admin, families. Mothers involved with school can be insane, no different than in NYC. People in the community act like the school is the ultimate expression of their own identity (as are all the sports teams, and I'm talking about 2nd graders!). [ Reply | More ]

thanks- I do wonder with some of the school descriptions. I am torn about going to a great district eg Millburn, or one not as lauded and maybe more lowkey [ Reply | More ]

The words of a friend are ringing in my head: Being the smart kid in a crappy school guarantees you a spot in a great college, without all the drama and competition. (She's from a not-so-great district in FL, had her pick of schools). [ Reply | More ]

IT is exactly the oposite of the UK, when I was applying. Private schools and southern schools were preferred. This make me want a great school, but I am not keen on the things that go along with it (little diversity, pushy parents, pressure). Maybe we should go for the town we like. [ Reply | More ]

Good luck with your choice. Not sure we made a mistake, but we are seeing all the stuff in your parenthesis, it gives pause. [ Reply | More ]

That's what I thought too. Then I found out that many of the HS students in my "top" district were engaging in behavior that I would want to isolate/protect dc from. [ Reply | More ]

OP: and youthink a NYC HS would be any different? I didn't mean that to be snarky - just honest. I was engaging in drug experimentation and having sex while I was in my urban NYC school. I still went to an Ivy league school and am doing fine - althoughwho knows what happened to some of the burnouts I used to hang with, when i wasn't hnaging out with the AP kids. i think it is probably the same anywhere. I'm not talking about drugs, sex, etc. I am talking about mean-spirited conspicuous consumption: teenagers not only driving nicer cars than their teachers, but bumping/ramming their teachers cars because they know they can get away with it. Teens torturing those in their classes who are slightly less affluent than the norm. Things like that. [ Reply | More ]
