NYC & Former NYC moms - what is it liek raising kids in manhattan? pros and cons? and for those who opted for suburbia, why did you make the move? what are the pros and cons? was it ahrd to adjust? DH and I are trying to decide. We figure we can atleast wait until ds is a few months or even a couple years old before we really go for it, but we have been talking about moving to North Jersey where we were raised. I just can't imagine life without my city, but being someone not raised here I don't know what would be better for my family. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I was an emotional mess moving out of our apartment and I was definitely down for a bit as we set up in our new house, but seeing my dh in the backyard playing soccer with dd, barbecuing and sitting out in our pool in the summer, being able to watch her play in the yard while i am inside doing housework, all these things make life so much better for us - we barely even go into the city when we thought we'd make it a weekly trip [ Reply | More ]

SAHM in tribeca. DS is 2yrs. i plan on TTC this summer. i think in 5 yrs we will move out for same reasons. so easy with little ones, but once DS is bigger would love to just open back door and let him run out and play! also people here are so rushed, busy and serious. glad i lived my 1st yr with DS elsewhere to begin more grounded. we are in NYC, 3 kids and moving this summer. I love the city but the logistics with 3 kids is difficult. I am fully prepared to be a bit sad for a year but like poster said above, I like the idea of having outdoor space and I am so over schleping up and down subway stairs, waiting for buses and when I need to run 6 errands, have to run back home 3 times because I can't carry everything with me. In the Bronx, not NYC. Raised in England, in the countryside. We are about to move to CT, and I know I'll be sad, have been here almost 20 years. But am so over all the aggressive, ghetto, hyper-competitive nonsense that goes with living here. Want to return to a simpler life, with a garden for the kids, and normal people living around me. ONe of the most important quality of life factors for us in chosing to remain in the city is time for my dcs to be with their father. His commute door-to-door is negligible; we have family dinner quite often (which becoem even more important as you child gets older and we can all discuss our day and challenges and successes, etc). He rarely misses a school event as it requires only a small portion of the day and can volunteer in the class room. This is invaluable. BTW, dcs are now 6 and 9. I also fetl that move to the burbs meant an end to my career: I thought that 2 peoplw working and commuting was impossible. I chose to stop working when dc was almost 1, but my location was not the reason I did so.... [ Reply | More ]

Same worries here! We made an offer on a house in the burbs and now having second thoughts. DD is almost 2, so thinking we can maybe stay here another year. BUT we want another kid and I really miss having a lawn and space. [ Reply | More ]

we left for fresh air and space. It is hard to adjust 6 mos out of manhattan. there are many pros though of being out of the congestion. it gets easier. [ Reply | More ]

we are so thrilled with our choice to move to northern new jersey - we loved the city, but after a few months of living here we realized that we were so incredibly negative and cynical - our lives are just more relaxed now without the hustle and bustle and dog eat dog city mentality that we used to find endearing [ Reply | More ]

let me tell you, i was born and raised in ny and so was dh - we were your stereotypical nyer - we dressed in black, worked all the time, went out for our cocktails at every trendy bar and made daily trips to gallery openings and museums - we decided to start having kids when we were 36, moved to the burbs while i was 4 months pregnant and havent looked back [ Reply | More ]
