[ - ] How much does having a WOHM vs. SAHM matter once kids start having homework? Worried that with afterschool and commute, dc will be at a disadvantage because I work FT. We'll have very little time to do HW together and still have playtime. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think, and we're not there yet (ds is just finishing K), that in the earlier grades assignments are handed out in advance, so there's more than one day to do them (Where my sister's dc go to school, they get homework on Friday due the next Friday.) By the time they're in 4th or 5th grade, they can do homework themselves, and you can just check it over. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a FT WOHM with kids in NYC public grade school. They do afterschool and I pick them up and they have sometimes done some of their homework but not all of it. They get about an hour a night, usually. So we have dinner and bath and then homework and then a little bit of downtime all in there and then bedtime at 8:30 on a good night and more like 9 on a typical night. It's tough [ Reply | More ]

They just finished 1st grade (twins). Homework is assigned each day to be turned in the next day. For 1st grade it was an hour: reading, writing and math. Most of the hour was alloted to reading aloud. [ Reply | More ]

PS 6. 20-25 mins of reading aloud, then writing the book names in a reading log. Then math games, which take 15-20 mins, then recording the results on a sheet, then spelling and sometimes sentence writing. Also sometimes we had drawing and writing about the drawing [ Reply | More ]

The picnic is always after work so both working and non-working parents have an opportunity to meet one another. Most families on a warm day have their kids out until dinnertime and this picnic includes bringing your own picnic dinner. I always enjoyed going to them with my kids and then plunked them in the tub, exhausted and full of stories of new friends. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] This whole distinction between prepped and unprepped kids is so absurd. Do you really think the unprepped 99s are total geniuses who are going to blow away the prepped 99s? That's not how school works. The kids get taught something, they go over it at home with parents through homework, and everyone's on the same page within the next few days. If anything, I'd say the kids who were patient and focused enough to be prepped have the upper hand in school. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

prepping is a loose term. there is something to be made of kids who went to preschool from ages 2-4, were read to, did a lot of enrichment activities vs kids whose first lang is not english, have single parents, may have done universal pre k if that, etc. not saying that neither child is gifted or not, but at this age, enrichment plays a big role [ Reply | More ]

This is how we "prepped" for G&T: did the sample G&T test sent out by the DOE so my child could have one experience filling out holes with a pencil; talked a few times about shapes; played "what doesn't belong" a few times. Didn't ever tell the child about the test - said that morning we were going somewhere to play some games and then go to the playground afterwards. Child scored 99. Obviously, it didn't hurt to talk about 3D shapes a few times in advance, but there was no way to know what was on the test or the environment of the testing. Some kids had trouble in the testing environment or with the tester and it didn't matter what the questions were. A 4 or 5-year-old child can't "crib" for an intelligence test - either they've learned certain information or ways of thinking from early childhood or they haven't. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I feel like we were really poorly advised during this process. Tried for Hunter and Anderson, also applied to a very limited number of private pre-K's. Didn't sign up for another year at current preschool. All of this under the "direction" of our PSD. DC got 99's on OLSAT and SB, 98 on ERB and is going to the only school that accepted...a so-called 2nd or 3rd tier pre-K. With these scores and lack of any "issues" I feel our DC could have done better and that I allowed myself to be advised into limiting our options. 54 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm feeling that she advised us poorly....wish we had applied more broadly or stayed at the preschool and applied to private K. No, I didn't know this would happen. This was our first time and we relied on our PSD to guide us. At the begining we had 6 options...the four privates, Hunter and Anderson. Figured we'd get a good choice because of DC's scores and PSD seemed to agree. Now that I've been through it and learned what it's really like I would have done it differently but of course now it's too late. [ Reply | More ]

Yes can re-apply but it will be with no help from the school because they are an ongoing, and will have the awkward and horrible moment of presenting the teachers with evaluation sheets and the stigma of being a family "applying out". Zoned public not an option. The only two publics we preferred over this private school were Hunter and Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I'm sorry but you have me all wrong. There is nothing snobbish here at all. We applied to the schools we liked and the schools we liked only. We were not advised to apply broadly and at the time, we thought you should only apply to places you'd actually go to. We knew we would not be comfortable sending our very young child to most public K's and that the schools would not allow us to hold back a year so we did not apply. [ Reply | More ]

I call BS. if you only applied to schools you liked, and got one, you should be happy. you cannot apply broadly for private preK, as only some schools have them...and very few, at that. the idea that sending your dc to anderson would be easier on him than other G&Ts is laughable. clearly, you thought you'd get hunter/anderson or HM and ended up with trevor or bank street. oh well, better luck next time [ Reply | More ]

In retrospect, I wish we had just kept DC at preschool and used this comming year to apply out. As far as publics go, we were not hapy wiht our DC being the youngest in a large class but felt that for Hunter or Anderson DC could suck it up. When it came to other top G&Ts, we went back and forth but ultimately decided it was not the best decision for us and went with the one private DC got in to. [ Reply | More ]
