I feel like we were really poorly advised during this process. Tried for Hunter and Anderson, also applied to a very limited number of private pre-K's. Didn't sign up for another year at current preschool. All of this under the "direction" of our PSD. DC got 99's on OLSAT and SB, 98 on ERB and is going to the only school that accepted...a so-called 2nd or 3rd tier pre-K. With these scores and lack of any "issues" I feel our DC could have done better and that I allowed myself to be advised into limiting our options. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

well then, you didn't have a choice now did you? are you complaining that psd didn't advise you to look at other G&Ts or are you mad that she didn't get you into a TT? your post is unclear. you applied to limited options, and now are stuck. How could you not know this was a likely outcome given the numbers? [ Reply | More ]

I'm feeling that she advised us poorly....wish we had applied more broadly or stayed at the preschool and applied to private K. No, I didn't know this would happen. This was our first time and we relied on our PSD to guide us. At the begining we had 6 options...the four privates, Hunter and Anderson. Figured we'd get a good choice because of DC's scores and PSD seemed to agree. Now that I've been through it and learned what it's really like I would have done it differently but of course now it's too late. [ Reply | More ]

You can reapply next year, right? BTW, what's your zoned public school? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.22.08, 06:59 PM Flag
»
Yes can re-apply but it will be with no help from the school because they are an ongoing, and will have the awkward and horrible moment of presenting the teachers with evaluation sheets and the stigma of being a family "applying out". Zoned public not an option. The only two publics we preferred over this private school were Hunter and Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

we gave up EC for LL. Know others who gave up similarly coveted schools for ps9 and anderson. I am surprised by your snobbish approach. you are not happy with any of your choices, but you were not able to get a tt school. did you not think that was likely when you tried for preK and only the 2 top publics? makes no sense that you are so surprised. OP: I'm sorry but you have me all wrong. There is nothing snobbish here at all. We applied to the schools we liked and the schools we liked only. We were not advised to apply broadly and at the time, we thought you should only apply to places you'd actually go to. We knew we would not be comfortable sending our very young child to most public K's and that the schools would not allow us to hold back a year so we did not apply. [ Reply | More ]

There are 4 December birthdays in my dc's K class, and at least 3 November bdays (my ds is one). That's almost a third of the class. All the kids did fine. [ Reply | More ]

np: It may well catch up with them later in MS/HS years, as it often happens. If OP does not want her child to be the youngest it's not a bad thing to consider. Given the redshirting in the rest of the country, your dc will always be up against the creek if so young. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I know, but that's those four kids and this is my kid and they're all different. We discussed it a lot...the money is not nothing to us. Ultimately we realized being the youngest would not be good for our DC. [ Reply | More ]

I call BS. if you only applied to schools you liked, and got one, you should be happy. you cannot apply broadly for private preK, as only some schools have them...and very few, at that. the idea that sending your dc to anderson would be easier on him than other G&Ts is laughable. clearly, you thought you'd get hunter/anderson or HM and ended up with trevor or bank street. oh well, better luck next time [ Reply | More ]

OP: I don't know what is BS here. You said "I call BS" and then went on to say exactly what happened to us. We came up with our list before seeing DC's scores. In retrospect, I wish we had just kept DC at preschool and used this comming year to apply out. As far as publics go, we were not hapy wiht our DC being the youngest in a large class but felt that for Hunter or Anderson DC could suck it up. When it came to other top G&Ts, we went back and forth but ultimately decided it was not the best decision for us and went with the one private DC got in to. [ Reply | More ]

Please lady quit your kevetching. Do you know how many were shut out this year that still do not have a placement. Count your blessings you have a spot. It is only going to be just as bad or worse next year. My ds scored 99sb, 96erb and 98olsat-no issues- we got in to a 3rd tier school and are THRILLED b/c our zoned school sucks. [ Reply | More ]

My child started in preK in a terrific school that is never called top tier on UB. It's been a great 8 years so far. They've covered much more material than her friends in public schools (like PS 41 and Lower Lab), per my conversations with those children's parents. [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand what you would have done differently. You said you didn't apply to other g&t's b/c you like your private option better, and there are only a few privates that have pre-ks that accept non-sibs. Plus, you already said that you applied to the schools that you would go to. I can't see what else you could have done. Applied to privates that you wouldn't have gone to? What would be the point of that? [ Reply | More ]
