How much does having a WOHM vs. SAHM matter once kids start having homework? Worried that with afterschool and commute, dc will be at a disadvantage because I work FT. We'll have very little time to do HW together and still have playtime. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think, and we're not there yet (ds is just finishing K), that in the earlier grades assignments are handed out in advance, so there's more than one day to do them (Where my sister's dc go to school, they get homework on Friday due the next Friday.) By the time they're in 4th or 5th grade, they can do homework themselves, and you can just check it over. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a FT WOHM with kids in NYC public grade school. They do afterschool and I pick them up and they have sometimes done some of their homework but not all of it. They get about an hour a night, usually. So we have dinner and bath and then homework and then a little bit of downtime all in there and then bedtime at 8:30 on a good night and more like 9 on a typical night. It's tough [ Reply | More ]

They just finished 1st grade (twins). Homework is assigned each day to be turned in the next day. For 1st grade it was an hour: reading, writing and math. Most of the hour was alloted to reading aloud. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, boy, Hope at my dc's school they do it differently. I like the hand out homework a few days in advance process better. [ Reply | More ]

I hope the same for you, too. In second grade, I'm told the HM is 1 1/2 hours a night [ Reply | More ]

I got it. I work late on Mondays (get home at 7:30), so I guess the babysitter will help with the homework and I'll look it over. Not a great process for parents who want to be as involved as possible. [ Reply | More ]

PS 6. 20-25 mins of reading aloud, then writing the book names in a reading log. Then math games, which take 15-20 mins, then recording the results on a sheet, then spelling and sometimes sentence writing. Also sometimes we had drawing and writing about the drawing [ Reply | More ]
