a dh: The only thing that really bothers me about my crazy, pain in the ass, mother is how much it bothers my wife. I came to grips with the person my mom is when I was in my early twenties. I compartmentalize it and am fine. I don't expect more of my mom than I get. My wife (whose mom is awesome) goes nuts. My mother is like this about gifts. Always has been. I still remember listening to all the arguments between her and my dad over him getting her the wrong thing. Once, it was actually the wrong color roses. ANYWAY -- as an adult, I deal with it by shopping for her the same way I would anyone else I care about; I try to get them something nice, something they'd like, within my budget, etc., and I intentionally DON'T keep receipts because I just don't have the time to go running around the city exchanging stuff for her. I actually think she has learned a little gratitude and that her attitude has improved slightly. GL, it sucks. [ Reply | More ]

SIL always manages to overstep boundaries and make it look legit; always wanting to buy furninshings for the house, etc. etc. Today, she is cleaning out fridge b/c something leaked. i am at work, by the way, my son told me all this when i called to say hi. i know that you will think i'm nuts and she is just helpful, but there is a vibe there - she is always trying to usurp me. sigh 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Depending on the school your dc may be there long enough to benefit directly from the endowment. Or if there's a younger sibling they may benefit. I think it's a slippery slope and it's not always easy to see where the line is. Great. But the MC and UMC public school parents who can afford to do fundraising on this level also happen to be the most powerful constituency in the city. There are plenty of working class public school advocates out there. They comprise many of the most vocal and ultimately most effective critics of the DOE. The DOE knows MC parents will get their kids the "extras" afterschool and in the summers, and are actually more dismissive of them as a group. It's the struggling families that speak up (and many do) that really have the most influence working from a grassroots level. [ Reply | More ]

That would have nothing to do with one another. Parents contributing to a parent-run endowment vs. administration handling admissions. The grammar rule is this -- if what follows a colon is a sentence fragment you do not capitalize. If it's a full sentence then you should. (Web 10, which is the standard most magazines use) [ Reply | More ]

it is also pretty competitive, but people move around at faster rates (meaning that you have diplomats coming and going, changes in administration, congress,etc)-more so than in nyc. but it is competitive [ Reply | More ]

that isn't often the case. they want you to be able to afford tuition or apply for FA, but it isn't all about money. it is about the dc and family. but if you had trouble in ny admissions and want to think it is about money, you are likely going to struggle elsewhere too [ Reply | More ]

DB is 2, so we haven't had any NY admissions anywhere. I don't think it is all about money at all - see my post regarding "power" since the OR discussed diplomats, etc. Just wondering how it is for the "average" nice family in DC versus NYC [ Reply | More ]

Most people in the DC suburbs use the public schools (some of the best districts in the nation). Only about 1/8 of the people in metropolitan DC live in the city. Even if you live in the city, personally, I think there are good public options. If you want to do the big name privates, yes it's very competitive, and connections matter. [ Reply | More ]
