Does anyone know how admissions in DC are compared with NYC for privates? Considering a relocation there... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it is also pretty competitive, but people move around at faster rates (meaning that you have diplomats coming and going, changes in administration, congress,etc)-more so than in nyc. but it is competitive [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. Do they require the crazy testing in the same way as NYC? How much factor does money/power play in? We are a normal nice family that makes a good amount but are not right by NY standards... [ Reply | More ]

it isn't just about money-anywhere. unless you are a kennedy or rockefeller-and even then, it isn't just about money [ Reply | More ]

I understand that, but I know in NYC they like very wealthy or connected parents and was wondering how it worked in DC [ Reply | More ]

that isn't often the case. they want you to be able to afford tuition or apply for FA, but it isn't all about money. it is about the dc and family. but if you had trouble in ny admissions and want to think it is about money, you are likely going to struggle elsewhere too [ Reply | More ]

DB is 2, so we haven't had any NY admissions anywhere. I don't think it is all about money at all - see my post regarding "power" since the OR discussed diplomats, etc. Just wondering how it is for the "average" nice family in DC versus NYC [ Reply | More ]

Most people in the DC suburbs use the public schools (some of the best districts in the nation). Only about 1/8 of the people in metropolitan DC live in the city. Even if you live in the city, personally, I think there are good public options. If you want to do the big name privates, yes it's very competitive, and connections matter. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. We would be moving to Georgetown and I don't think public there is a great option, [ Reply | More ]

I'm pretty sure it is no where near as competitive, unless you have your heart set of Sidwell Friends, etc. [ Reply | More ]
