[ - ] Speaking of tardiness, how does private schools handle this? Late pickup? 1 Reply [ Reply | Watch | More ]

they won't tolerate it. Most charge you extra money for late pickups. If you have a problem with tardiness / late pickup in preschool, it will go on the preschool report, which hurts your chances of getting into an ongoing school [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Can anyone provide info/reviews of ballet schools in NYC for preschoolers? I'm looking at the Joffrey school in the village but have heard good things about Ballet Academy East. My 3yo lives for ballet, but are these programs really worth the cost for that age group? Are these classes different from other pre-ballet classes that are more like $15 per class? Thank you!!! 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I love BAE, but at this age any progrma that dd enjoys is fine. I know a kid who did all local classes until age 7 and at age 8 was accepted to SAB....if that is your goal. [ Reply | More ]

I sincerely apologize for offending anyone by using the word "ghetto." Not to justify it, but I was using it as a slang word (inappropriately, I now see). I just meant that the ballet studios around me are small and a bit run down. I am actually a person of color myself and would love my daughter to take dance classes at a place that is as diverse as possible, both racially and economically. We have a very small budget for paying for classes, so I want to get the most for my money. My daughter loves ballet and magical things (i.e. fairies, dragons, mermaids, etc) so I wanted a ballet studio that is at least clean and airy feeling, with sweet and nurturing teachers. Thanks to the person who said that BAE is overcrowded. I will definitely stay in my own hood (in Bklyn) rather than trek over the river to Manhattan. Thank you. Again, apologies for being offensive in any way. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Its interesting reading the posts about 99 erb kids who got SO to privates. There were a few in our Preschool. I was surprised but when you looked closer at the kids themselves, you could see that most wouldn't do well at the play visit because they would be wild and would not take directions and focus on work they were given during the visit. With so many great candidates, its easy to see that schools might pass on these kids because they have so many to choose from. The other 99 that was SO applied to only a few of the top schools and not broadly because of the ERB score. The parents though an acceptance from a TT school was going to be automatic. These schools had fewer spots this year so even with a 99, the odds were really against them. I also think applying for FA will also hurt your chances. The competition for FA is rough. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think they have some of the same problems as non-99 kids, i.e., if the dc comes across as "young," the high ERB is not going to help them. The only thing harder to deal with than an immature dc (immature compared to peers) is an immature dc who is also supersmart--they are difficult to manage in a group. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that immature 99ers are weeded out and told too young (esp'ly summer birthday). Friend's dd with 99x3 didn't get into TT bec of summer birthday but did get into 2 privates (though not TT) still. [ Reply | More ]

I find it hard to believe that a dc who is so "wild" and unwilling to focus and take direction on a school playdate would behave so differently in the ERB testing situation that they would be able to score a 99. Do you think the parens might be lying about dc's scores, or do the testers just sit on these dc and pull the answers from them like pulling teeth? If so, the the narrative reports must be loaded with negative comments. [ Reply | More ]

I posted above about "young" dc with high ERBs. Typically, they do very well one on one with an adult. But they have a hard time in a group of peers because 1) they can't always be the center of attenting, and 2) can't relate to their peers. Of course, this doesn't mean all high ERB kids are like this--just those who have not yet matured. I've known 2 dc like this. [ Reply | More ]

my ds hasn't taken the ERB yet, but he is very smart and does well in one-on-one situations (i.e. in a room with a tester), but doesn't do so well in a group setting. So I think it is conceivable that he would do well on the ERB and not do well in a playdate. Also, his school report may be questionable. [ Reply | More ]

I think school visit in a big group just observes how kids play with each other (behavior). They may separate kids into small groups (2 or 3) for school's internal eval. [ Reply | More ]

Apply to a wide range of schools, and be open to everything. If you have a connected PSD, see if she will give you early feedback (good and bad) so you have a sense of how the playdates are going. If he has a good playdate somewhere, push hard at that school. good luck. [ Reply | More ]

That's true, but we found that checking the nanny's past employment (and whether she was able to provide a solid list) was very helpful. If you are interviewing Mexican nannies, for example, it's a red flag that all the references are also Mexican because there is no way to confirm that they are not her relatives. Our nanny had a varied list of families. [ Reply | More ]

Both of my nannies (had first one for 5 years, second 1.5 years and counting) were/are young so work history was limited. They are awesome nannies however. All depends what you are looking for. Obviously, fake references would be a red flag. But same language not necessarily is. We are friends with two families from Latin America, and they both have Spanish-speaking nannies on purpose to reinforce the language. Many international families do this actually. [ Reply | More ]
