[ - ] Has anyone rented a "hospital grade" breast pump? Is it worth it or should I just buy one of those Medela pumps for $250? Thanks. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

we had a hospital grade pump at work in the pumping room. I used that at work and the PIS at home (great, since I did not need to schlep pump to and fro). both were great for what they were. i think it depends on how long you plan on pumping and if you are going to have several kids. I used my PIS for 2 kids, pumped about 11-12 mos for each kid [ Reply | More ]

It might be worth renting the pump for a few weeks to see if it works out. I bought the Pump in Style with high hopes of breast feeding and it just didn't work. If $ not an issue then give it a try. [ Reply | More ]

I second the sentiment above about renting before buying. I bought the PIS before I gave birth, had HORRIBLE problems bfing, never used the PIS because I needed to pump exclusively....ended up having horrible problems with milk overproduction and the PIS would never drain my breasts.....well maybe it would have if I had just stayed hooked to it 24/7. I ended up pumping for 6 wks with the hosp pump and then switching to formula [ Reply | More ]

I recommended the hospital pump for a few weeks (above) and funny (probably not really funny) is because I had the opposite problem. There was just not more than a bit of milk to be had, no matter what I ate, drank or how often I pumped. That's mother nature... [ Reply | More ]

lol, one of the reasons I stopped was that my breasts were so full all of the time that I would be in severe pain within 90 minutes of pumping. I couldn't go anywhere for 6 wks because I would have had to lug the hosp pump with me since I couldn't nurse db with my G cup boobs. I felt like a big fat cow and that mother nature was playing some cruel joke on me [ Reply | More ]

This is probably in part because you used the hospital pump--they really send your milk production skyrocketing. I used PIS for #1 and Symphony for #2, and there was waaay more milk with #2. Symphony is much, much faster too. There's no question it's better if you can afford the rental fees (about $80 per month, which works out to a lot more than the PIS in the long run). I think it's weirdly MORE portable because you can throw it in a tote bag, fwiw. I hate the PIS ugly black bags that scream "breast pump inside!" -np [ Reply | More ]

If you're pumping at work, you might want a hospital grade one - I had the Symphony. It was much stronger & quieter than the PIS. Took less time to pump at work and was less noticeable. It was also very helpful when I needed to boost my supply. I kept it at work and used the PIS at home. [ Reply | More ]

Nursing perpetually is normal during the newborn period and can continue for some time till you and baby find your rhythm. Even then, when growth spurts strike baby will return to constant feeding. But it's great. Most powerful parenting tool you'll ever have. Get yourself a copy of Kathleen Huggins' book The Nursing Mother's Companion. She has a great weaning book as well. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, FYI, weaning is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics until after one year (not a few months) and you will never be "free" of your child and his/her needs - nor should/will you want to be except in occasional moments of extreme frustration. Being a mother is for life and it is both the most difficult and the most rewarding thing I have ever done. [ Reply | More ]

It's a real problem in the US that nursing mothers get such negative feedback from other women. The community does new moms a dreadful disservice by saying that "it gets real old real fast". How about, "If you run into challenges, reach out to experienced mothers, lactation consultants, la leche, etc. Let's lead one another to success instead of piling on the negatives. [ Reply | More ]

Hang on a minute. It's sanctimonious and shoving down someone's throat to point a nursing mom in need of support toward those who can offer support? That's not how I see it. I hear someone asking for information about whether her babe's nursing pattern is normal and receiving the response that soon she will be able to wean and she'll be free! That doesn't strike me as responsive to the question "Is this normal?" Information about what's normal will best be offered by those who are experienced with the broad range of what's normal. If the question was "When can I wean?" then my answer would be different. [ Reply | More ]

lol, it'll only be great for me if I can leave the kids with him. The reason we're not taking the third week of august (and have him just come back to NY for the couple of days he needs to be here) is b/c we did that each of the last two years, and it pretty much sucked for both of us, esp for me. To be clear, he's the interviewER, not the interviewEE. So practice interviews are something that it's a nice thing for him to do, but definitely not critical for him. [ Reply | More ]

Are they your first babies? If you can wrap your sleep-deprived head around it, Weissbluth's book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" thoroughly describes typical sleep patterns. Basically, they'll be evolving a more predictable sleep schedule by 4 mos. You'll want to encourage this by establishing sleep rituals and cues starting around 2-3 mos. Once you can get them to sleep at the same time, things will improve drastically. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson kids are smarter generally. But the school does not teach Ren or Medieval History (doesn't teach anything about Europe except for 20th century). It only has one foreign language, Spanish. And all classes are large. The school is going through a phase where it isn't bucking the DOE and doing its own thing like it used to, so it has more of the weaknesses of a NYC public school, despite an impressive student body. Ren and Medieval History are part of the global studies curriculum taught in public high schools in depth. It's touched upon when studying explorers in 4th grade. My other dc had it earlier, but by the time they were both done with HS, both had learned the same things, just at different times. [ Reply | More ]

Personally, for an elementary or K-8, I would rather ask: Is my dc learning how to think critically? Think analytically? Think logically? Is my dc learning how to write well - creative writing as well as personal essays and research papers (for MS age)? Is my dc learning how to speak in front of others? Is my dc learning how to analyze text? I'd rather know about those things than when medieval and renaissance history and chemistry are taught. [ Reply | More ]

I would turn down Hunter for Dalton or Trinity. I would turn down Anderson (of the schools where dc applied) for Collegiate, St. B's, maybe ECFS. [ Reply | More ]

We didn't apply to Anderson, but did apply to Hunter and a range of private schools. Would have taken any of them over Anderson, which is inconveniently located and run by the DOE. [ Reply | More ]

And the reason I'd be more likely not to hire is because I'd be afraid of DH having a crush, I think it's more that I'd feel like an unattractive old person in comparison. [ Reply | More ]
