for those of you considering public and private, which private would you turn down anderson for? (if you only want private, please don't answer). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

ditto. if we had gotten trinity, would have been hard to turn down, even with the financial burden. would consider dalton, but in the end, would likely choose anderson over it. [ Reply | More ]

It said, "which private would you turn down", I'd turn down those two, not others. [ Reply | More ]

np--Do you people have any idea of the quality of education at what UB is calling second tier schools? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.17.08, 05:54 PM Flag

Most of them don't, but many NYers do, which is why they are almost as hard to get into as TT. Same goes for many of UB's 3rd-tier. [ Reply | More ]

that wasn't the question. I am looking to see how people looking at both private and public mix their rankings. I think you are someone who only wants private, so go away. [ Reply | More ]

When does Anderson teach chemistry? Can you give me some idea of the content? When are medieval and renaissance history covered? Tell me about the foreign language offerings. Tell me the class size for foreign language and how many times weekly is it offered? How many times weekly is science taught and what is the class size? How is the science lab? How many science teachers for K-8? [ Reply | More ]

lol! tell me the IQ of the average lower tier kid. that makes all the difference in the world. spoon feeding fancy subjects to average kids whose parents coddle them and hire tutors to help them learn just the basics will still land them far behind the smarter kids with fewer offerings at anderson. sorry if you need to believe otherwise. np: I'm a big believer in public schools, but I don't think you are helping your argument here. When science, history, and foreign language are considered fancy subjects . . . public education is in big trouble. [ Reply | More ]

all of these subjects are taught, and taught well at anderson. but i have seen the extras at privates, and they do not seem to raise the overall intellectual level of average kids. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson kids are smarter generally. But the school does not teach Ren or Medieval History (doesn't teach anything about Europe except for 20th century). It only has one foreign language, Spanish. And all classes are large. The school is going through a phase where it isn't bucking the DOE and doing its own thing like it used to, so it has more of the weaknesses of a NYC public school, despite an impressive student body. such bs. the bucking the doe thing has not impacted the curriculum at all. if anything it just gets increasingly rich. the parents pay for everything anyway, so whether anderson likes the selection method or not has not had an impact on what is taught. [ Reply | More ]

Ren and Medieval History are part of the global studies curriculum taught in public high schools in depth. It's touched upon when studying explorers in 4th grade. My other dc had it earlier, but by the time they were both done with HS, both had learned the same things, just at different times. [ Reply | More ]

Personally, for an elementary or K-8, I would rather ask: Is my dc learning how to think critically? Think analytically? Think logically? Is my dc learning how to write well - creative writing as well as personal essays and research papers (for MS age)? Is my dc learning how to speak in front of others? Is my dc learning how to analyze text? I'd rather know about those things than when medieval and renaissance history and chemistry are taught. [ Reply | More ]

We didn't apply to Anderson, but did apply to Hunter and a range of private schools. Would have taken any of them over Anderson, which is inconveniently located and run by the DOE. [ Reply | More ]
