not in the city, but I'd stay out of kiddie pools. ds kept getting various illnesses, rashes, ear infections, eye infections. Each time we took him to the Dr. we were told to keep them out of kiddie pools. They are so small that they get pretty warm, and between the diapers and snot, etc. the amount of chlorine they would have to put in to really kill everything would be dangerous. Stick with a bigger pool. [ Reply | More ]

not to downplay the risks of drinking during pg, but honestly i don't think 3 drinks/day for that short a duration is going to cause any significant harm. please don't put so much faith in the 'sites' you're reading. talk to your doctor instead. so many websites and books overdramatize everything about pregnancy. they pretend that one drink will permanently scar your baby because they don't think women can be trusted to make judgement calls. [ - ] How Do I Help My 10 YR Old Brother Socialize? He has been getting bullied since Kinder. He wants to be everyones friend and just always ends up getting rejected, insulted, or made fun of. I have always spoken to him, but he always tells me that no one wants to be his friend. Hes a genuinely sweet kid but no one gives him a chance. What can I do to help him socialize. I was thinking maybe joining him in boys scouts. Where else can i take him to meet other boys besides the kids in his school. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

What else could be contributing? Is he really smart and having a hard time relating to other kids? Does he have something-one thing that he really likes? Maybe there's some kind of club that he could be a part of and meet other kids who share the same interests. And, karate is a good idea. [ Reply | More ]

yea, I will look into Karate. He is very smart. Has been a straight A's student since pre-k. Likes to play the Piano, and is awesome at drawing. His first drawing was at 3.5 of the ninja turtles and it was very detailed. Almost like anime. He doesnt like painting, but he loves shading. I've taken him out of 2 schools. Once in 1st grade and again at 3rd grade because the kids wouldnt leave him alone. Also, he would do anything to fit in, so he has been getting in trouble lately. the teachers lets it slide at times because they know hes a great kid. He goes to a reg charter school in the south bx. Ive been thinking of where to send him after he finishes this year the 5th grade. I just feel so bad. And now he lives with me because my mom left the country when they killed my other brother. Im trying my best to help him out. [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 07.20.08, 12:54 PM Flag

Both. He always got bullied. I guess the other kids took him as a joke because they knew he wanted to be their friend. They would make fun of him. The 2nd school we took him out of was because i thought the teacher was racist or had something against him. she was a black teacher in like a 99% black school. it was a local catholic school, and 1 of the kids would hit him, he'd go tell the teacher, and the kids would say he hit them first and he would get detention or wont go on recess. around here, most of the little black and hispanic kids act like savages, and he's so sweet. it breaks my heart, he gets home a 7 out of 10 he's sad. Church groups are pretty good. My sister and I were in Pioneer Girls (like Girl Scouts) at our local baptist church when were we young, and it was so nice and accepting. And a lot of the girls I did end up going to high school with, and it was nice that, whether they were popular or nerdy in high school, we all were still kind of friends because we'd done that together. I like the karate idea and the church groups idea. Basically, any sport that kids don't do from the time they are 4 (so, soccer, swimming, those will be out). Maybe golf lessons or wrestling at a local gym, or art lessons. You sound like a wonderful sister, by the way. [ Reply | More ]

Im off to look online for some art lessons. Im sure he'll enjoy that because he loves drawing. He cant meet anyone new that he doesnt make them a drawing. He has such a good heart, and im trying to preserve that in him. I dont want these kids to jade him. Thank you on the compliment. Im 23 and have an 18 month old daughter, and we dont have any other family but ourselves in this country. But theres so much violence right now in my country, that i told my mom I rather struggle with him here, then have him grow up over there, so she let him stay with me. My brother was shot in the head, even though he gave his chain to the robber, and im scared of losing my only live brother. [ Reply | More ]

Does have a dad, big brother, or male figure in his life? He sounds like a smart sweet kid but the other kids are picking up on something about him--a desperation? maybe he doesn't follow the social cues they're sending out? I know it's different for boys and maybe an older male would have some ideas/guidance? [ Reply | More ]

There are rarely tutors or "organizational support" assistants at the college level in general ed. I'd say it's really a question for the college counselor at her high school and/or a college placement advisor. I'd say you'd want to steer her clear of the funkier places like Bard that actually require self-discipline to learn because it's more relaxed. She might do better in a smaller school, maybe even SS. Look upstate NY, the Amherst and Bostson metro MA area, and in Pennsylvania (the Bryn Mawr cluster). Or someplace like Clark -- I have a friend with serious dyslexia who went there. [ Reply | More ]
