There were several girls in DS's kinder class very into that stuff (and the parents encouraged it) and those girls were honestly the "mean girls" of the class. Total queen bees obsessed w/ their standing and playing one another off of each other, and sometimes making things tough for the non-mean/non-alpha girls. It's tough. I did 4 IVFs and spent about $100K ($25K each). Reimbursement from insurance was about $60K. I used 3 different insurance carriers as each carrier had $10K or $15K max reimbursement for infertility treatment (note: not all of the cost are considered as fertility treatments - so insurance may reimburse larger than their max fertility treatment limit). Get ready to fight with insurance companies for every line item. They will decline/reject coverage even if it should be covered. My husband and I also used FSA account. My company has $10K limit, and his company has $5K limit. We contributed total of $15K per year during the treatment. Anything that was not covered by insurance was paid out from FSA account. FSA is pretax basis, so taking $15K off from adjusted gross income can be helpful for your tax. [ Reply | More

That is great. Insurance may cover up to 100% when using in-network doctors. Unfortunately, top fertility specialists tend to be not in-network. how old are your dcs? Are they school-aged already? PS 9 might be an option if your dcs are very young and you have a few more years to keep an eye on it as it is turning around. There is a strong principal and the parents are very active in supporting the school and bringing in great enrichment programs. Many UMC folks started sending their dc to PS 9 a few years ago for Pre-K; there is greater diversity therefore in the younger years and it is making its way up the grades. I know parents who have kids there and they are happy and think the principal is doing all the right things. So, if your dcs are young, in a few more years, it will be even stronger and I would suggest visiting the school yourself to see for yourself. I toured and it exceeded my expectations. [ Reply | More

op here (sorry, posted and then had to run!). but this is very helpful. we are calculating the cost of private school in and if we move to PH we can still afford a modest single-family brownstone...other side of flatbush it would be condo/coop. really want the house and yard...but not at any cost. dh and i are both public school grads and are really in favor of that direction, for lots of reasons...but, again, not at any cost. i have heard that PS 9 is improving, but i walked by the other day and it was depressing. DC is still really just DB (~10 mos) but as non-native NYers we only slowly realized how unrealistic private school is even if we wanted to make the sacrifices to afford it. [ Reply | More

It is totally fine. (no offense taken, we were really torn about moving there) So close to 5th and all the trains, easy walk to Smith/Court. Our block is actually really good - great block assoc, and our building is almost 100% young couples and families, everyone is incredibly nice, TONS of kids. yes, ps 9 is not appealing from the outside! Inside is much, much better though. And apparently there is a parent led-capital campaign for a new playground; they had a planning event for it this spring. PS 9 still may not be the place for you in a few years, but just be aware that private school, aside from the price is a challenge too in terms of getting admitted (not nearly as bad as manhattan, but not a guarantee and certainly less options than manhattan.
