Really? I think that is already too old. Some of the moms I know have taken their 5-6 yos for mani/pedi already. [ Reply | More ]

taking them for a mani/pedi at 6 is one thing, playing up "beauty" and sex at a party is another. [ Reply | More ]

who said anything about sex? it's just another form of pretend play doing make-up, hair and nails. [ Reply | More ]

pretend play that reinforces certain ideas about what women are supposed to be/look like.... [ Reply | More ]

Oh, and dressing up your girl as a Princess and reading her Cinderella doesn't reinforce an even worse idea? [ Reply | More ]

no, we play princesses as heroes, rescuing people and being active and smart. Not sitting arund being painted up so she can look pretty for boys. [ Reply | More ]

why are you so angry? I work (and I think SAHMs make a contribution too). I just don't want my DD force fed consumerist crap about needing makeup to be "glamorous." [ Reply | More ]

or below - ITA with you (fwiw, my boy enjoys dressup and playing prince as much as the girls enjoy princesses, and we plan major escapades to "rescue" the dog from terrifying situations, etc) [ Reply | More ]

I am deeply offended that you choose to say that a SAHM is not participating or contributing to society. It's our responsibility to raise and form young people who will contribute to this world. I pity the child who does not receive proper guidance and thinks everything should just be handed to them because they are pretty or they just deserve it. [ Reply | More ]

Who said anything about being pretty for boys? People in general should take pride in their appearance. [ Reply | More ]

but a Glamour Girl party, having 5yos put on makeup, etc is not age-appropriate and is only teaching young girls that those things make them more attractive (presumably to the opposite sex). No need for that - teach your 5yo to brush her hair and teeth, keep her face and hands clean, etc. Move on to makeup when she's a teen [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Why do women wear makeup? to look good. Why do they want to look good? To attract a mate. that's the MO of every ad and woman's magazine--you are flawed and need makeup, creams, powders, botex etc. to look good. Why does a 5yo need that crap? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.24.08, 09:50 AM Flag

they don't. I am an attractive woman and I do wear some makeup (mostly to hide blemishes and dark circles that I am not fond of, I'm never heavily "made-up"), but I see no need to put lipstick on my 5yo for any reason! [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand the "presumably to the opposite sex". Maybe that's what you were taught, but some women just like to look good. Period. [ Reply | More ]

I like to look good too, but I would never consider "glamorizing" my young daughter. When she's in high school she can if she wants to [ Reply | More ]

so you've never read a woman's magazine? watched an ad? I've nver woman makeup, so it's never been an issue for me. Good for you if you like makeup, but i don't think 5yos need to be taught that they need it. [ Reply | More ]

ITTA! Women dress up for other women much more than they dress up for men. Most men can't tell you if a woman or girl has her nails painted or not but most women notice right away. [ Reply | More ]

np - I do neither. My dds have a large assortment of dressup clothes ranging from old bridesmaid dresses, princess costumes, armour, doctor outfits and many other things. And sorry, but Cinderella was at least able to help herself with the help of a strong woman! (i'm joking here) [ Reply | More ]

you can think that if you want to but it doesn't make it true. I am a beautiful woman and I don't want my beautiful daughters being tramped up when they are children. Who cares if it makes them more "hot or popular"? [ Reply | More ]

np: ITA. There are a lot of things out there in the world trying to sexualize young girls--they don't need their parents to help them with that. Parents should be setting some limits and teaching them what's appropriate. 5 y.o.'s with make-up = not appropriate. [ Reply | More ]

wow, I really hope you aren't teaching your daughter your values. but I'm sure it wasn't foisted on you as a way to look "hot" or even "cute" the way GG parties are. Its like Hannah Montana and HSM being popular among 6yos - not age-appropriate. [ Reply | More ]

But also not 5. I agree about the HSM and Hannah Montana being totally inappropriate for 5 y.o.'s. There were several girls in DS's kinder class very into that stuff (and the parents encouraged it) and those girls were honestly the "mean girls" of the class. Total queen bees obsessed w/ their standing and playing one another off of each other, and sometimes making things tough for the non-mean/non-alpha girls. I think you can't blame it all on HSM etc but that is a factor. [ Reply | More ]

I have had the same experience. My kids know about HSM but they're not into it (I don't let them watch Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, I don't think it is appropriate for 3, 4 and 6yos), and I wouldn't ever encourage it. [ Reply | More ]

I really haven't seen HSM or Hannah Montana but I don't think they're as bad ad Brooke and her "nothing gets between me and my Calvins" type sexuality. I thought those things were kind of wholesome [ Reply | More ]
