Maybe Larchmont/Mamaroneck as I have a bunch of friends in both and the commute is good. Or maybe Greenwich (I'd have to see if the people were too flashy) or Westport because Westchester is possibly overrated. [ Reply | More ]

- OR. I think in some parts you just don't get that much for your money and the taxes are bad. Even though the commute is good and the schools are often good. DH is not from here and he doesn't get the whole Westchester is great/NJ is the pits thing. I think it depends on how much you have to spend. [ Reply | More ]

You're right. You get jack for a lot of money and not a lot of land AND the taxes are outrageous. You have to factor how much $ you have to spend before considering towns in Westchester. If sky's the limit than move on over to Rye, Scarsdale, Bronxville. If you've got a budget, Ardsley is a good deal with good schools. Commute also is an obvious consideration. [ Reply | More ]

We just moved from UWS to Larchmont and love it. Despite high taxes, selected it because proximity to NYC, on the Sound, great schools, very pedestrian friendly. Also, close to stores, very convenient. I hate having to drive forever to get a cup of coffee or a container of milk. Also love RYE [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Need some help...totally torn about buying a house (Westport, CT) been looking for over a year. Found something on a great street, great location (very neighborhoody which I wanted) property is OK (.5 acres, back yard has a very slight slope and for some reason that is bothering me) the house is on for $950,000 and we brought a contractor/architetc in to ball park a major renovation - kitchen/family room, 2 additional bedrooms and bath etc. he said on the high end we are talking about $500,000 but thinks we can get it done for $400,000 now we know it always comes in higher then they say etc. but we do know people who have used him and they say he really isn't a gauger etc. anyway we're worried that when he draws up the plans etc. we are only going to be able to do the kitchen family room ( our budget is really $400,000) and I don't think I will be happy with the house with just that...so torn :( 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

that's out of control. contractors are notorious for not coming in at estimate. also, the slope is a pain (we have 2 acres of slope). can't set up an inflatable pool, for example. [ Reply | More ]

pretty slight, varies in some areas, but really huge lot. we could never afford to level it. sounds like you are putting a huge amount of $$ into a new house. [ Reply | More ]

it's not a new house? i mean it would be new to us. our price range is 1.3ish and we can't find anthing we really like so we thought this might be a good option for us if we could get it done for $400,000 [ Reply | More ]
