Need some help...totally torn about buying a house (Westport, CT) been looking for over a year. Found something on a great street, great location (very neighborhoody which I wanted) property is OK (.5 acres, back yard has a very slight slope and for some reason that is bothering me) the house is on for $950,000 and we brought a contractor/architetc in to ball park a major renovation - kitchen/family room, 2 additional bedrooms and bath etc. he said on the high end we are talking about $500,000 but thinks we can get it done for $400,000 now we know it always comes in higher then they say etc. but we do know people who have used him and they say he really isn't a gauger etc. anyway we're worried that when he draws up the plans etc. we are only going to be able to do the kitchen family room ( our budget is really $400,000) and I don't think I will be happy with the house with just that...so torn :( [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It doesn't sound like it's your house. You should be sure. [ Reply | More ]

that's out of control. contractors are notorious for not coming in at estimate. also, the slope is a pain (we have 2 acres of slope). can't set up an inflatable pool, for example. [ Reply | More ]

pretty slight, varies in some areas, but really huge lot. we could never afford to level it. sounds like you are putting a huge amount of $$ into a new house. [ Reply | More ]

it's not a new house? i mean it would be new to us. our price range is 1.3ish and we can't find anthing we really like so we thought this might be a good option for us if we could get it done for $400,000 [ Reply | More ]
