Actually, it matters a great deal. There have been dozens of studies about the impact of an individual's name on his success, particularly pertaining to jobs. This is why people with stereotypically "ethnic" names are often at a disadvantage. And why searching for "trendy" names is a joke and harms your child. [ Reply | More ]

I realized after first db that gender is only a part of who this individual is. If you want a dd b/c you love the clothes or a ds b/c you want to do little league you may find that you have a dc with no interest in those things. np-I wouldn't say "this is not okay." That sounds too much like disciplining someone else's dc to me. I would say, "db was playing with that. Can you give it back, please, and I'll make sure you get a turn in 5 minutes?" If the dc doesn't give it back, and the mother doesn't say anything, I would probably let it go. But your friend would probably take your cue. If she didn't and it continued to be a problem I would talk to her about setting up some ground rules for playdates. [ Reply | More ]

ita. i would say it in that way as well. or at least hope that i would in the moment. i think it's best to come in as non-confrontational as possible with little kids at that age. they don't know they are doing something wrong, but need to be gently corrected. the other mom should be doing it, of course [ Reply | More ]

No need for it to awkward or putting yourself in the position of disciplining someone else's dc. What you do is say, "Joey, Harry was playing with that. Let's find a fun toy and see if he will trade you. It isn't fun when someone takes your toy. It is fun to trade." Then you show the two of them how to trade. Your younger one will have fun being part of the game and the older one will start learning how to negotiate play situations. [ Reply | More ]

i have a dad acquaintance and we take our kids to the beach sometimes. kids are 3. he has this theory that kids should just work out everything amongst themselves, short of killing each other. he's not lazy either, it's just a genuine theory that they learn best that way. he says, we may have genius negotiators on our hands and we'll never know. but it's hard for me to follow along with this even a little, ESPECIALLY when my child is being the aggressor. it's interesting, though [ Reply | More ]

I subscribe to that theory also but not when the kids are at that age. A 16mo is in no situation to work this out. Even the 2yo has no real grasp of what happened either. I have a 5 and a 3yo at home and I usually let those two work it out most of the time. [ Reply | More ]

So, their choice is fine if it is the one you would make.... Don't get me wrong, I don't think it is the better choice but part of allowing an adult to have a choice is allowing them to make what we would consider a "bad" choice. I mean Pat Robertson believes in a woman's right to choose. So long as she chooses what he believes God would want. I don't see your beliefs as any different -- just your outcome. [ Reply | More ]

No. The opposite. Not all multiples have bad outcomes. And not all multiples end up having the full number of implantations. (Natural/spontaneous abortion) When those babies are "suffering" they are suffering because "something bad happened." [ Reply | More ]

They need not be full term to not "suffer needlessly." Your point is that all quintuplets suffer therefore the mothers ought to have reduced. Granted quintuplets don't make it to full term but I am not granting your logical leap that they suffer needlessly. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like depression. I know, cause I've had chronic depression on and off for the past 14 years. First off, there's nothing "wrong" with being depressed, and taking some time to try to heal. But if you find that it goes on for more than like three weeks, and if you find it difficult to get out of bed or to take care of basics of life, then *definitely* find a therapist you like and trust and respect. Problem is depression can start with "just not wanting to talk to people" and if all goes well, that will go away, and you'll feel better again. But in many cases it can easily spiral quickly into a much more serious place. So just watch yourself closely, maybe even keep a chart to see if you are improving, staying static, or starting to descend, in which case, don't wait. find someone right away. often there's a waiting period for the good therapists. Can you make small steps in getting back into talking to people. I taught my dd to read at that age. I first started with the sounds of letters, then the sounds 2 letters make when put together. We took out the magnadoodle and started with 2 letter words and built up from there. She was eager and excited. Made it a fun game to play at the end of the day [ Reply | More ]

My dd was interested at that age. We read to her a lot, and when she asked us how to spell words we would ask her what sounds she hears instead of just telling her. It's torture at first, and you just want to tell her how to spell, but it really helped. My dh is a 1st grade teacher, and he told me to do that. She already knew most of the letter sounds at that point from a variety of sources. Also, dh bought the Electric Company dvd. It's great; you should get it for your dd! She learned a lot from it, and it's funny. I learned to read from that show, too. My dd is 5 now and finishing kindergarten, and she reads at a 3rd-grade level. [ Reply | More ]

OP: thanks for the advice all. we already have the leapfrog videos and best of electric company and I agree, they're great (and I'd much rather put that on than TV). I'll check the websites and such mentioned and I appreciate the ideas about how letters sound together etc. It's been so long since I learned to read, it's hard to break it down! but your advice will help, thanks.
