4yo is interested in learning to read, and I've been trying to help her, but I don't want to screw her up -- of course I know how to read, but I don't know anything about teaching someone else how. Advice? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I taught my dd to read at that age. I first started with the sounds of letters, then the sounds 2 letters make when put together. We took out the magnadoodle and started with 2 letter words and built up from there. She was eager and excited. Made it a fun game to play at the end of the day [ Reply | More ]

teach you child to read in 100 easy lessons by engleman (and others I can't remember). or subscribe to headsprout.com (very good tutorial sessions). starfall.com is free and great for learning letters, not as great for teaching reading. [ Reply | More ]

I bought some of the LeapFrog videos -- they really helped dd learn the letter sounds, and how to put the sounds together. She is now the only dc in her preschool class who reads. [ Reply | More ]

My dd was interested at that age. We read to her a lot, and when she asked us how to spell words we would ask her what sounds she hears instead of just telling her. It's torture at first, and you just want to tell her how to spell, but it really helped. My dh is a 1st grade teacher, and he told me to do that. She already knew most of the letter sounds at that point from a variety of sources. Also, dh bought the Electric Company dvd. It's great; you should get it for your dd! She learned a lot from it, and it's funny. I learned to read from that show, too. My dd is 5 now and finishing kindergarten, and she reads at a 3rd-grade level. [ Reply | More ]

OP: thanks for the advice all. we already have the leapfrog videos and best of electric company and I agree, they're great (and I'd much rather put that on than TV). I'll check the websites and such mentioned and I appreciate the ideas about how letters sound together etc. It's been so long since I learned to read, it's hard to break it down! but your advice will help, thanks.
