[ - ] My dd received a rejection letter from NEST for middle school yesterday. I just got a call from NEST today, saying that they messed up the scoring on a bunch of the tests, and my dd did indeed get into NEST, and they would be sending out a corrected letter. Doesn't bode well for how accurate the test scoring has been for the rest of the DOE exams this year. 27 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

this happened last yr with NEST and my cousins son. He was told that he didn't make the OLSAT cut off by a RJ letter. Then months later sent a letter saying there was a mistake and he made it to round 2. She already had decided that he would go to PS 110 [ Reply | More ]

but there was no cutoff last year. Heard about a similar case too. I think NEST just kept going down the list of scores because school didn't fill all spots. That's why I don't think it will be that difficult to get in this year if you scored 97+. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Hmmm, very interesting. So is NEST lying about messing up the scoring, and are they really just going down the list because they didn't fill their spots? And if so, why not just say so? [ Reply | More ]

You're right. They shouldn't have to lie about it. Not sure. But I do think they kept going down the list last year (as did other G&Ts) until they filled spots. That's why DOE instituted a cutoff this year. [ Reply | More ]

That might make sense - if NEST notified original accepts on Friday, and told them they had to commit by Wednesday, (yesterday), and people are now being called today, Thursday and told that surprise they actually got in, that would fit scenario that not enough among the original accepts were willing to give them the commitment by their deadline. Funny thing is that I was told by another parent whose dd had been accepted last Friday, that she needed to tell them by the following Wednesday (which did not give them time to see what their district school choice was). Guess they are back-tracking since they screwed up. [ Reply | More ]

Ridiculous that a public school would make you commit before you see what your other public options are. No matter how late the district process is this year, there's really no justification. They deserve to have people commit, then renege. [ Reply | More ]

A few schools do their own admissions notifications (NEST, Anderson, PPAS, Columbia Secondary, maybe Manhattan East). For most, the DOE handled this year through a "match" system like the high school process where kids and schools each rank their choices, within each district. Drag is that the individual schools notified much earlier than DOE and are making people commit before they hear from their district schools. [ Reply | More ]

OP here (the person two up from me is not OP, she was just addressing me I think). OK so basically, my DH has lost money in the last 2 years, just like all of us wall street families. However we have not made reductions to our standard of living. We have encountered a few large expenses this year, household and medical. We have not taken a vacation because of this. i have not purchased any new clothing or anything for myself or DH in over a year. I am not sending younger DC to any extra curricular classes or activities. I do not claim any of this to be a hardship. We are very lucky people with a nice home, school and food on the table. I just feel that with this reduction in income I need to start contributing. I do contribute of course in my role as a SAHM, but I think given that I'm a smart and educated person I should also bring in a bit of cash. [ Reply | More ]

I don't really understand this. If you work, it's highly likely that unless you totally luck out you'll not even be covering the cost of the babysitter. So you won't be contributing. Honestly it sounds like you need to suck it up and get rid of the sitter. Put the kids in your gym's babysitting while you work out or something for your free time. [ Reply | More ]

I've always had an interest in PR. In fact, I'm the on-call PR consultant for my friends in show business...I always write out for them what they should say at auditions or on the phone to their agent. I also offer this kind of advice to friends applying to schools. I'm good at phrasing things in a positive or constructive light! I'm also good at delegating, multi-tasking and managing. I have a great sense of how things "come off" and how brands and people are (and will be) perceived. I do NOT have great spelling skills but I am a slave to Spell Check and would be mortified if any professional work EVER went out with spelling errors on it! Any interest in letting me send you some writing samples? BTW, I'm good in person. Professional actress, put together, yada yada. [ Reply | More ]

This may be a little far to walk during your lunch hour -- just hop on a bus or subway -- but Party Store on 14th betw 5th and 6th would be great. [ Reply | More ]
