She's been w/us 6.5 years, and for the last year I've been paying F/T and using her only noon - 6:30. Starting in Sept, both DD's are in school until 2:30 and I can't justify the F/T pay for only 4 hrs/day and she can't live on less. [ Reply | More ]

Posting on NYU job board, letting everyone I know know (so they can let THEIR nannies know, so they can let their friends know, etc.) I know we'll work it out but the search is rough. She is totally overwhelmed and a group of us who are her college friends, want to do something. We thought of a spa day, but she is reluctant to leave everyone even for a few hours right now. Food or wine didn't seem like a good idea since her dh is nauseous and has trouble eating. Any ideaS? 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

assuming she's not extremely wealthy right now, i think a really nice gift is a delivery of dinner every wednesday night for a month (or longer if you can swing it.). even if it's just a pizza brought to the door. it takes so much off your mind when you know that at least dinner is off your head that one time a week. Good one, I'll suggest this to the group. They are having some financial issues as well--dh is on disability, but worked mainly on commission so they are losing income. Good suggestion to make it a specific day of the week so they can plan for it. [ Reply | More ]

yes, having it as a set thing is really nice. ideally you can make an arrangement with a local pizza store or take out place where they can place their order and you will be billed for it. alternatively, send them a gift card to a specific store and specify what it's for. or get gift certificates to diffferent places and send them to her with the date that it's for. can you take the kids at various times to give her and DH some time alone? One of you could take the kids to a movie and others could bring dinner (something he would be able to eat) or drive them somewhere to do something etc. The idea being all they have to do is get dressed. You guys take care of all the details and give them some fun (if possible I guess depending on how he feels at any given point) I know when my dad was ill, my mom was just exhausted from the demands of caring for him. "well, it wouldn't be the end of the world in any case." or "dh and i never noticed. i guess it just hasn't bothered us." or "time will tell." but also be sure you solicit some advice and don't appear to reject everything they say. sometimes just smile, nod your head, and just keep rocking the baby. maybe when they talk too much, just hand them the baby and go do something else. think duck, water. (i could give about 1,000 examples of her having her feelings hurt of course). all of this is kind of beside the point. she was a good mom (or at least raised my wonderful dh) which is what I'm trying to focus on now but it's been incredibly hard.
