Regular or heavy alcohol consumption is proven to be bad for babies. They have no proof that the occasional drink does any damage (or that it does), which is why they say it's better to be safe than sorry. In most countries, they aren't that rigid (and their kids turn out just fine). [ Reply | More ]

Strictly speaking, none. One glass here and tere, preferably of wine or beer is considered ok in the third trimester. Whatever you do, at least try to abstain from drinking any during the first trimester and hard alcohol at any point. [ Reply | More ]

My OB told me there's no difference between a glass of wine and a mixed drink in terms of the amount of alcohol. I had a v&t a week throughout pg (not a wine or beer drinker). [ Reply | More ]

Self-care is important; a person who does not take care of oneself cannot take care of others. They may seem like selfish choices to you, but obviously the other people do not look at it that way. [ Reply | More ]

It's in the East Village, District 1. Progressive, two age groups per class (except 3rd grade is stand-alone) starts in preK. I don't know how they're doing admissions now--it used to be by lottery within ethnic group. Good teachers, but not strongly focused on academics. Most kids I know from there have gone on to Tompkins Square Middle School. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Chicago suburban moms. If we only want to spend $600K or less on a home, will we feel completely out of place in Hinsdale or Clarendon Hills? Want the schools, but don't plan to spend more than this. Don't want to be keeping up with the Jones, but want good schools. Other suburb recos that fit this (with a decent commute to O'hare?) 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We are in Hinsdale and absolutely love it. We bought 1.5 years ago for 800k and have a 1985 house with 4 bd, very small kitchen, large family room, 3.5 ok baths, but a great lot and location. We do feel fine, but are definitely on the low end. You would do better in Clarendon Hills and get the same great schools - and the schools are fabulous. I have one in elem (special ed - LD) one in middle (gifted) and one started high school (very avg kid) [ Reply | More ]

I don't think the multicolor applications were BS, just misunderstood. People received them if they had originally, incorrectly, received an application that indicated they could choose a citiwide, even though the child's score was below 97. [ Reply | More ]
