D3. No way we'll get 9 and from what I heard on here even 166 and 163 will be out of reach. But I'm pretty good with it. Mostly because I think in general my ds will do better if he's older in the class instead of younger. He just might be that boy that teachers euphemistically call "young" when they really mean immature! [ Reply | More ]

Isn't it funny how different their scores could be. 94 poster above you and ds got a 98 on SB. But think he didn't make the cut because he seems young. His ERB was really low. So many of these kids are really bright but don't necessarily test so consistently -- depending on day and tester. [ Reply | More ]

Good point. But is that different from the SB or ERB. And don't all these tests norm for age within a few months age block? [ Reply | More ]

np again: Agree w/NP above: it's simply the ability to focus for that long on answering questions from a stranger. 45 min is a long time for 4 yr olds. The older or more mature kids probably have an easier time of it (I'm just speculating). [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.10.08, 08:16 AM Flag

The norming for age is a different issue than the format. The SB is administered by licensed psychologists, and they have some leeway in helping a child along who might be withdrawn or introverted. Don't know anything about ERBs. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.10.08, 08:18 AM Flag
»
That's true. And would def. explain why my ds did better on the SB. But I do wonder about the ERB. I don't think they're psych, but I do think they're "professional testers." However, from what I understand they aren't really allowed to help a kid along at all. [ Reply | More ]

I did testing for ERB for several years. All ERB testers have at least a Master's in psych (school or clinical). Many are graduate students in their final years of training. Just as with the SB, the test makes (or at least should make) every effort to draw out an shy/introverted child. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.10.08, 12:29 PM Flag

talk to any SB tester and you will be told that the format of test administration is strictly adhered to -- no "helping" a child along. the fact is that young kids might test differently on different tests and with different testers. trying to disect why a kid scored the way he did on one test but not on another is just making yourself feel better. the majority of kids tend to test consistently across tests -- which could mean a 10ppt differential. I had a miscarriage and got pregnant 6 weeks later without ever getting my period. It was pretty traumatic for me, though. I really wanted the pregnancy that didn't take and after the miscarriage, I decided I didn't want any more kids. The first 6 months of the pregnancy were really hard on me emotionally and I'm not that way generally. I've never been depressed before that in my life. I think my hormones took a LONG time to settle. [ Reply | More ]

I hope you're ok too. I am fine now. Before I had the miscarriage, I had no idea how hard it was to recover from. The experience sure enlightened me. It's also tough having a miscarriage when you already have a child. You know exactly what you're missing and the unrealized expectations can be really rough. If you are pregnant, just be prepared for a little ambiguity about the pregnancy and know that it will pass. It did for me and now my daughter is a happy healthy 14 mo. GOOD LUCK!! [ Reply | More ]

I don't know why I'm not able to reply to your post below, but just wanted to wish you good luck too and thanks again. I think you're absolutely right - I thought that having a miscarriage now that I already have a child would be "easier" given that I don't have to worry about not ever having a child, but in fact it's been the opposite. And I think it's precisely as you said - you know what you're missing and somehow I started to imagine a person much sooner than last time. Anyway, all the best to you and your babies! I agree with you, I think the number of 99s is much higher than 1/3 of the total. In D3, 192 kids were above the 95% and 157 were above the 97%. That means there were only 35 kids in the 95th and 96th percentiles so I'm not sure why we can assume the distribution is any higher for the 97% and 98%. [ Reply | More ]

Everyone keeps forgetting that most of the highest scoring kids are likely going to TT or Hunter. Even if you are correct and nearly half of the 97+ are 99s, I would suspect that at least a third of them (but probably more like a half) are not applying to G&T--thus all the phone calls the DOE is making! I never said 'most'--I said 1/3 to 1/2. Given that top scorers are the same ones that the TT and Hunter took I don't think that is unrealistic at all. Hunter accepted 48. They also went to at least 10 on their wait list for boys and a few names in for girls. That is about 60 spots. In addition, in response to the poster above you in all of the polls on this site (and there have been many) there were never more than 25 99s and only a small handful (probably fewer than 5) willing to ditch private for Anderson. Finally, while we have a very Manhattan or perhaps Brooklyn centric look at the world there are in fact over 550 people outside of Manhattan who scored 97+ and I doubt that the bulk of them (Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Riverdale, and a few pockets in Queens excepted) that will schlep to Manhattan for the citywides. Yes, and I included Riverdale and all of Manhattan in my estimate. But I still think there are about 300+ people outside Manhattan not considering citywide. And while everyone here is convinced that people are geniuses in this city only 6% of the kids who took the test for entry grade got over 97%, 8% (2% more) got over 95% and 14% (6% more) got over 90. That means roughly 1% each for 90- 96, and around 2% each for 97, 98, 99. Why would the distribution be 4% 99 and 1% everything else? [ Reply | More ]

I hate 'needing' a car and favor the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It's got great rear storage, is ridiculously fuel efficient, will handle your kids' seating requirements through many years(unless you have any more), isn't a hulking suv and isn't ugly. It does have the same issue as many hybrids- you can't cover large areas of backseat floorspace with stuff. [ Reply | More ]

No an older sib at ps 9 would not get sibling preference to get into A. Only the other way around. A sibs scoring below 97% (but at least 90%) can list ps9 g&t and get sibling preference. [ Reply | More ]

I mean in the G&T. the sib preference should only be for dcs who go to that school. there are dcs in A who don't live in D3 and shouldn't have a preference in a school where their sib doesn't go. If they were do do this, it should be reciprocal. [ Reply | More ]

The preference was considered for D3 kids only, so if your kid does not live there then they can't get sibling preference there even if sibling is at Anderson, because PS9 has a G&T for D3 kids only. Who need it least really because their other G&T choice is not likely to be very far away. So it's pretty screwy if they are actually doing it, last I heard it was still just a rumor.
