My father and I had a similar problem after my mom (it was a long time ago now) and when he started dating and remarried it got worse... I always felt that everything would be better, more organized, more sentimental, more "real" had my mom been there as I felt she was the orchestrator and glue and he just wanted the appearance of a family still OK... anyway, time passed and I realized that he was just as confused and sad as we were and he really didn't know HOW to do what I wanted of him. We just tried to approach each other from a new way instead of trying to resurrect the old one and we're good now... very good... [ Reply | More ]

np: this is not helpful. why are you trying ot make her feel bad? anyway, start by cutting out one feeding every few days. leave the bedtime one for last - its usually the hardest for them to give up. any kind of formula is fine. if db won't take it, try pumping a little and mixing it with the formula til db gets used to the taste. For a day or a few days? Day trips include Dia Beacon and the sculpture garden outside of NYC (yikes, what is it called), MIL may enjoy mansion tours like Westbury Gardens or Kykuit (although probably not with DB, they were very serious on my Kykuit tour). My in-laws LOVED the Adirondacks which are great for dbs. Otherwise Newport or the Hamptons. I have never been to the North Fork of LI but that could be nice as well. We rent houses for space so I don't have any resorts in mind. [ Reply | More ]

North Fork resident for many years and I don't think there's enough to do with a db along. There are not many restaurants & hotels. It is a nice place to rent a cottage at the bay for a while, go boating, taste a few wines or relax with a good book but there's very few downtowns, sidewalks and places to go with a baby in tow. There's more opportunity to windowshop, find an outdoor cafe where you can pull the stroller up and people watch on the South Fork side. [ Reply | More ]

What's Pawley's island like? Where do you vacation there? Is it super hot in the summer? You know, I think its really hard, maybe even too hard, to decide what you'll want 30 years from now. Where will all of your friends be? Will that even matter? Maybe you'll be more sensitive to the heat...or to the cold. [ Reply | More ]

condo. we fly into Myrtle Beach. we're usually able to get a direct flight, which is an hour and a half, gate to gate. we rent a car and the drive is about 20 minutes south. you can also fly into Charleston. The drive from there is a little less than 2 hours. dd was actually conceived there. it's a great place for kids of all ages. all the condos have pools that are shared with other with other residents. we always like to end a beach day at the pool, and dd much preferred the pool to the beach with she was little. We prefer the off-ocean units. We've stayed at Heron Marsh, Osprey Watch, Oystercatcher, and Pelican Watch. We also stayed at Bridgewater. Heron Marsh are the cheapest, but it's also the oldest (although many units have been renovated at this point). It also has the largest number of units, which makes the pool very crowded. We prefer the other 3. They're all nice. There's a new batch that look really high-end but we've never stayed there. [ Reply | More ]

you need to think about the services for seniors each state will provide unless you are able to pay for them out of pocket. my guess is that CT has more programs set up to help with health care, tax relief, transportation services, assisted living etc. It's an important part of deciding where to retire that an organization like AARP provide information regarding. thanks. there actually is a huge retirement community in South Carolina. One of the reasons I DON'T like it. I'm afraid that off-season, it'll just be a bunch of old people riding around in golf carts. Madison seems more of a regular community, although more and more, it's turning into a summer home spot a la Hamptons [ Reply | More ]

I like the idea that as a retired person I could still take the bus/train into NYC and see a show or an exhibit - or go to a great restaurant and then go home. Especially if its not during the rush hour and SC summers sound very humid but then again it's humid here, too. [ Reply | More ]
