[ - ] UWS 99, now cursing myself for listing NEST second. Should have ranked it below PS9. We will drive if need be, but man, what was I thinking? Anyone else? 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

ouch! not to rub it in, but I would never have done that. Loved ps9 personally, and didn't even look at NEST. There will be a lot of regrets for a lot of people who got caught up in the Citywide thing. Good news is that you can always move. [ Reply | More ]

We are a 98 UWS will Nest listed second. Not sure if we will get it, but our third choice-PS 166-- is definitely more convenient. [ Reply | More ]

Where can I find online resources to get me upto speed on the schooling system, options and desirable institutions and any insider help. Also if I was to plan to move to Manhattan, what areas are recommended for bringing up kids, considering schools, after-school activities etc. Appreciate all your help. Thanks [ Reply | More ]

If your dc seemed to start to start reading spontaneously and with fluency, it's more likely s/he went more or less straight to sight words without much of a "sounding it out" phase. [ Reply | More ]

sight words are those you can't sound out. [ Reply | More ]

Not necessarily words they can't sound out. They're words dc knows by sight and doesn't need to sound out. [ Reply | More ]

np--I thought sight words are words that don't follow any phonetic rules (like "of," "one" and "sure"). The list of dolch words seems to be a list of 2oo commonly used words--including some words like "go," which are phonetically straight-forward and commonly used in text. [ Reply | More ]

Some words don't follow standard phonetic rules and can ONLY be learned by sight, as opposed to other words that can be sounded out first and later become part of dc's sight-word vocabulary. But sight words are ANY words the dc recognizes and can read without sounding them out. The dolch lists include the most commonly used words because those are the ones dc is most likely to learn by sight through repeated exposure, and conversely they're the most useful ones to know by sight since dc will encounter them so frequently. The first ones they usually learn are their own names plus the most common words they come across in their books: stop, go, the, and, up, down, etc. Google "dolch words" to see a more comprehensive list. Some dc pick these words up simply through natural exposure to regular texts. Others need to learn them more deliberately, for instance with flashcards or basal readers. And some dc will use a combination of those. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Everyone always says kids at a given publlic got their first choice MS or HS (first heard this at anderson onsite last year). But the kids have to have a certain score on the test to get in, and don't even apply to top programs if they did not score well. so of course they got their fc school. its the one they were eligible for. hardly a big deal 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

of course it's a big deal. there is no guarantee that your dc will get fc even if they qualify. always more applicants than spots. [ Reply | More ]

You know not of what you speak. While there are a few MSs and HSs that are entirely score based (Stuy, Bx Sci and the other specialized schools) or mostly score based (e.g., Delta), the majority of the really good schools (e.g., ESMS, Salk, Beacon, Bard, LaGuardia, Millennium Townshend Harris) take scores into consideration along with grades, attendance, portfolio work, and everything else (and for LaGuardia, auditions as well). For those schools (esp the HSs) the odds of getting in based on the numbers of kids applying are steep (less than 5% or 10%). So don't piss on these kids who work their asses off and due to that hard work and luck get into their FC schools. [ Reply | More ]
