How many parents ranked PS 9 G&T with a child already in the school (or Anderson)? Trying to figure out how much sibling preference there might be. [I tried to post this earlier...don't know where it ended up.] [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Anderson said fewer than 5 siblings qualified [ Reply | More ]

Those siblings that didn't qualify for Anderson with at least 97% are eligible for sibling preference at ps9 g&t if they scored at least 90% to make it into the g&t program. [ Reply | More ]

Yes they do. This sibling preference rule was changed in the middle of the process. A and ps9 are the only schools that have a "building preference" for siblings. [ Reply | More ]

But it only goes to the district program, right? A kid with older sib at PS9 does not get a sibling preference for Anderson, does he? [ Reply | More ]

No an older sib at ps 9 would not get sibling preference to get into A. Only the other way around. A sibs scoring below 97% (but at least 90%) can list ps9 g&t and get sibling preference. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it makes sense at all. why should they get preference at ps9 but not the other way around? [ Reply | More ]

Because A is a citywide program. [ Reply | More ]

Granting sib pref based on anyone attending PS9 would reduce # of seats available to qualifying kids outside that District 9/PS9 catchment area. You know that there ARE smart kids outside of the UWS, don't you? [ Reply | More ]

of course there are and they can go to their own district G&T. they shouldn't be taking away spots from qualified D3 applicants just because their sibling happens to go to another school in the same building. [ Reply | More ]

So you're saying that D3 applicants should have a special priority for Anderson if they have a sibling at PS9? [ Reply | More ]

not sure if you were responding to me but all I am saying is that if A sibs get a preference at ps9, then ps9 sibs should get a preference at A. personally I don't think that either should get preference outside of their own school. [ Reply | More ]

Only D3 A siblings are eligible for this preference, so it's really a very crappy solution all around. I certainly hope PS9 contests being a dumping ground for 9. Just waiting to bring it up at the SLT meeting if this is confirmed. [ Reply | More ]

waiting still and no sib pref here. The score was the only one in our district qualifying for citywide and that means nothing in this [ Reply | More ]

Because A is a citywide program and thus has stricter requirements to get in. [ Reply | More ]

but a ps9 sib who scores a 99 can't put down A 1st without losing her sib preference at 9. If a ps9 sib qualifies for A, why shouldn't she get preference IF the A sib who scores between 90 and 96 is going to get a preference at 9? [ Reply | More ]

This makes sense...maybe the ps9 sib who qualifies for A would get sibling preference. [ Reply | More ]

Doesn't sib preference for citywides diminish the standards of these programs? I can't get a straight answer from DoE if sibs qualifying didn't score over the cutoff. [ Reply | More ]

I mean in the G&T. the sib preference should only be for dcs who go to that school. there are dcs in A who don't live in D3 and shouldn't have a preference in a school where their sib doesn't go. If they were do do this, it should be reciprocal. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I see what you mean. I would think that you have to live in the District AND have a sibling to get the priority. But I have no idea. [ Reply | More ]

Where exactly did you hear this? I was told the opposite by the DOE. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.10.08, 08:45 AM Flag

The preference was considered for D3 kids only, so if your kid does not live there then they can't get sibling preference there even if sibling is at Anderson, because PS9 has a G&T for D3 kids only. Who need it least really because their other G&T choice is not likely to be very far away. So it's pretty screwy if they are actually doing it, last I heard it was still just a rumor.
