[ - ] I'm so shocked by the work ethic of some people who have limited options. My last nanny gambled with her job by calling out all the time and was very unreliable. When we started interviewing nannies we found that many were not willing to put in the hours..they are from 10:30-6:30 for now but once dd is out of school they go to 9-6:30 and once #2 arrives and I go back to work the hours would be from 8-6....I had so many nannies ask for shorter hours, which is not an option for us and others flat out said that it was too long of a day. When we hired our current nanny we made the hours clear and she agreed. Tonight dh asked her if she can come in at 8 tomorrow since he needs to leave early and she said that she isn't a morning person and that it's hard for her to come in before 9. I'm shocked by this...can you imagine telling your boss that you can't come in early for a meeting. 19 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Nannies dont make $200/yr; they have lives outside of work and want to spend time with their own families. Assuming a 1 hr commute -she works a 12 hr day-pretty long [ Reply | More ]

ITA. A lot of nannies have a real piece of shit work ethic. I think you should find a new nanny -- 8 to 6 is pretty standard. Also, try to find one that doesn't have much of a commute. GL. [ Reply | More ]

why should anyone work a 10 hour day if they don't want to. It's long for very little money. [ Reply | More ]

yes but you were young and single. If you need long hours, your best bet is young and single nanny, too. [ Reply | More ]

i've had young single nannies. they are the worst. they want to go out all the time and are unwilling to work beyond normal hours. they are also not good drivers, as I learned the hard way. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe, but then again, they don't get paid much, the work is tedious, and if they have their own family having longer hours simply may not be an option (for childcare/family reasons). [ Reply | More ]

That is ridiculous. If you laid out expectations up front, there is really no excuse. My nanny, who is paid well, will consistently leave my child in front of the tv for hours even though I have repeatedly said that there's a 30 min per day limit on TV. I find this frustrating, among other things, and have worked with enough nannies to know that there is no perfect person and that mediocrity is better than life endangerment. I have no solution for you, but offer empathy! [ Reply | More ]

you give me hope. i have cycled through 9 nannies in 6 years, firing for reasons ranging from arrest for shoplifting, totaling the car, to leaving my 3 year old in the car when it was 95 degrees outside (my dd could have died). I have NO CONFIDENCE that i am able to hire good people. agencies suck and rip me off big time! [ Reply | More ]

NP Why don't you use daycare? It sounds like you're not able to find quality caregivers or put in the time to manage them. Seems like you need a switch. [ Reply | More ]

I have no other parent to help with pick up and drop off. my kids are now school age, but I am commuting and working from 7 to 7, which is no good for daycare. plus, daycare won't accommodate a sick child and I need to keep my job (and can't take off with sick kids all the time.) [ Reply | More ]

There are some good nanny agencies but, you can also have good luck with online sites. If you want a nanny to work long hours though you have to pay her very well. It's exhausting being with kids for even 6 hours so, 9 or 10 hours I'd say pay her very well. We've all had sub par nannies but, there are wonderful women out there looking for jobs. I have used two great agencies- one is called Abby Nanny. You can reach the owner at CZDLutz@yahoo.com and the other agency I used was Pavillion. Both agencies do a great job. Pavillion is expensive but, they did find me a stellar nanny and she stayed with us for 6 years. My current nanny / housekeeper I found through Abby Nanny which is less pricy, CZDLutz@yahoo.com, and we love her ! Both agencies interview nannies and check references and do a personality profile and have optional criminal checks... [ Reply | More ]

i've had nannies with all sorts of work ethics. i'd also point out that the lower your income, the fewer options you have in terms of other issues...childcare, healthcare, etc. which may limit your availability. that being said, i'd never tell an employer "i'm not a morning person". i'm also wondering how cultural attitudes come into play here.
