ps87. kids of all personality tyoes attend good publics and thrive. remember, your dc will not be 4 yo forever. being shy does not mean you are sent to an overly coddling, tiny private school for life. btw, my shy dc ended up in G&T, and has become more comfortable than he was at nurturing preschool. As the mom of a very bright, very shy child, I chose a private. My DD would be completely overlooked in a public school (she'll never cause a fuss and will always do what she's told). I think a new start up will bend over backward to pay attention to a bright, shy DC. [ Reply | More ]

yes, but your kid will end up in boarding school because they will have a hard time getting into a decent nyc independent school for HS out of there. be prepared for that. at least in public its easier to jump ship and go private whenever there is a spot. [ Reply | More ]

I attended a lower tier nyc k-8, and was bored bored bored. luckily got into a good HS, but also family had some connections by that time. I would worry about a new school with fewer connections for HS. I would also worry about peer group. I went to a decent K-8, and even then many of the kids were just average. [ Reply | More ]

yes. I think smart kids are less coddled and have to become more resourceful to succeed. I also think that if you want to trade up among privates the school will give you little support and it is not great politically. I also think that I would not be happy staying long term in a school I did not respect for a smart kid. all in all, public seems better than a new school with a weak peer group. your kid will be competing with other k-8 kids from better schools with a long history of connections. I used to work at a "lower tier" k-8 and we had many dc go to TT and second tier, no not all of them, but many. We also had many go to selective publics. [ Reply | More ]

to the poster with a very bright, shy dc at private: I have the exact kind of kid. chose public G&T, and she is thriving, never overlooked and has actually become less shy. not the kid who will confront anyone or run to be first in lne, but way more friends and happier than in preschool. may have happened in private too, but this idea that shy kids will only thrive in very small classes with tons of attention is false. who knows, but I think my dc liked having less pressure and people breathing down her neck. her teacher is the very attentive type though. I think so much depends on the teacher...you were lucky...I also knew the teacher my DD would get in her private and that teacher is known for being able to deal well with shy DC...maybe next year I'll have a different opinion, but, for now anyway, I think I made the right decision... I guess my point is that a shy dc can do well in either environment. good teachers count a lot anywhere, of course, but there is no one answer for any certain type of dc. [ Reply | More ]
