[ - ] Went with friends last night to their country club for 4th celebration. The place is beautiful and very relaxing and sooooo easy for DC and we have been toying with the idea of joining BUT historically it was a closed and segregated club, it has a reputation for being so, and seeing the all-black staff in uniform gives both DH and I the creeps. We know many great couples (not racist, anti-semetic, etc) who belong. Could you join ? 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes, there are. It is a city with many of these clubs. Some have a better pool, better tennis, better food, etc. One couple at this particular club is Jewish and they tell me I'm nuts. I tell them they are blind to the place. I wish they were right. [ Reply | More ]

I live in a community with clubs like this and do have a few friends who join these clubs despite their (recent) history. It does affect how I see them. I see them drinking the Kool Aid and I feel bad that they would debase themselves - thats at least how I see it. [ Reply | More ]

from "being" I interpreted OP to mean that the club is still closed and segregated (whether overtly or covertly) so... I have no desire to spend my time at or my money reinforcing those types of environments. I reject an argument which says it "could not change." And also, I would hate to think what it would mean about me if I joined and eventually got used to this situation. [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 07.05.08, 09:09 AM Flag

Is it your impression that it is restricted today or not? Where I grew up there were clubs which admitted a few (token) members. That gave the younger folks moral cover, it protected the club and it made some think, "I'm gonna be able to help change this place." But if you hadn't voted against FDR...you weren't getting a chance to change anything [ Reply | More ]

It sounds like you're leaning against it. If you have other clubs as options (post above suggests so), I'd look elsewhere. That darker people are in uniform is creepy, given the place's history. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, there are other options. This club has the best of the "things" as in pool, teams for kids, golf, food, etc. but saying you belong there says "a lot", I think. What it says today is what I am not sure of exactly. [ Reply | More ]

DH isn't religious so it wasn't an issue for him. He was willing to baptize if I wanted to, but I really didn't want to. My parents have also grown somewhat dissatisfied with the Church so they sort of understand, but wish we had baptized. I would like the kids' to have some sort of faith, but I'm not sure which one. np: I'm a Unitarian, and it's a good place. You can start by going to a couple of services. Congregations' styles vary a LOT; some are traditionally churchy in the service organization (hymn, reading, sermon), others are much looser and more like organized discussion groups. [ Reply | More ]

I believe in Heaven in a comforting way. That I'll be reunited with only the people I love and miss. I don't think it has anything to do with being "good." I think serial killers and pedophiles will also be in heaven with people they love and miss, that their essence will be stripped of its badness, like a reversion/conversion. Crazy sounding, maybe. NO. I like tyour idea. I have been thinking about it a bit - I don't honestly know why now - but someone yesterday mentioned heaven and in the discussion she said that she believes that only Christians will be in heaven and while it doesn't sound nice, that is sort of a tenet of the faith. Yes, in a sense. But if you are a person who believes in the tenets of your faith (ie jesus is the redeemer and the only way to the Father is through Him) you sort of have to believe that it's that way or the highway. Now insert a joke about the "Highway to Hell". [ Reply | More ]

Yes, they are all there for that man. I don't believe in a heaven with people walking around and chatting. I believe it's more a souls thing, where you are at rest and in comfort and at peace.
