Went with friends last night to their country club for 4th celebration. The place is beautiful and very relaxing and sooooo easy for DC and we have been toying with the idea of joining BUT historically it was a closed and segregated club, it has a reputation for being so, and seeing the all-black staff in uniform gives both DH and I the creeps. We know many great couples (not racist, anti-semetic, etc) who belong. Could you join ? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes, there are. It is a city with many of these clubs. Some have a better pool, better tennis, better food, etc. One couple at this particular club is Jewish and they tell me I'm nuts. I tell them they are blind to the place. I wish they were right. [ Reply | More

I live in a community with clubs like this and do have a few friends who join these clubs despite their (recent) history. It does affect how I see them. I see them drinking the Kool Aid and I feel bad that they would debase themselves - thats at least how I see it. [ Reply | More

from "being" I interpreted OP to mean that the club is still closed and segregated (whether overtly or covertly) so... I have no desire to spend my time at or my money reinforcing those types of environments. I reject an argument which says it "could not change." And also, I would hate to think what it would mean about me if I joined and eventually got used to this situation. [ Reply | More

Is it your impression that it is restricted today or not? Where I grew up there were clubs which admitted a few (token) members. That gave the younger folks moral cover, it protected the club and it made some think, "I'm gonna be able to help change this place." It sounds like you're leaning against it. If you have other clubs as options (post above suggests so), I'd look elsewhere. That darker people are in uniform is creepy, given the place's history. [ Reply | More

Yes, there are other options. This club has the best of the "things" as in pool, teams for kids, golf, food, etc. but saying you belong there says "a lot", I think. What it says today is what I am not sure of exactly. [ Reply | More

People who belong there that I know personally are telling me that they are the club today, but most of them would never have been able to join even 15 years ago (maybe less !). I want to believe that, but that may just be the salad bar aclling... [ Reply | More
