My parents have a subscription to the Pearl Theater (on St. Mark's) and I sometimes take their tickets and always like the performances. Very reasonably priced, but always well-done. (And there's a great Italian restaurant around the corner for dinner after the show!) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Does anybody know about reputation about PS 124 and 130 G&T(D2)? Do they have strong academics? Majorities are Chinese? Our DC was accepted but difficult to commute so thinking about declining a spot. Too bad DC couldn't get in 116 or 11.... 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

These are "Chinese" schools (90%+ of DCs are Chinese). They have great math scores, but not so good ELA scores (I wonder why). I'm sure the academics are great. I would worry about social aspect if DC was not Asian [ Reply | More ]

Your facts are TOTALLY incorrect on ELA scores. "not so good ELA scores"? Please check the DOE site and report back that, for example in 2006, 124 had a HIGHER % of 4's (13.5%) than either PS234 and .2% lower than MNS (290)? Maybe in those years, 234 and 290 also had a bunch of Chinese that dragged the scores down? [ Reply | More ]

I spoke with a mom last year who had her caucasian son in the g&t for K. She said she would probably pull him out for first grade because being a minority was tough socially. Even in g&t, most kids were Chinese. I would personally not commute to go there if my child was not Chinese. Was that your third choice? [ Reply | More ]

Splenda made me feel shaky and headachy, with this chemical aftertaste in my mouth. I used it for a long time, because I was trying to lose weight, until I read this study that showed that people actually GAIN using artificial sweeteners because it intensifies their craving for sweets. So I switched. And it didn't affect my weight loss at all, and the shaky, headachy feeling stopped. [ Reply | More ]

Want to know what else artificial sweeteners do to the body? They raise cholesterol levels and can cause early onset diabetes. The reason is simple: when your taste buds sense something sweet, they send a signal to your hypothalamus to produce more insulin, because *sugar* is on its way down the hatch. Only ... you've fooled the body. It's not really sugar. If you do this enough, your body will have a dangerous insulin imbalance. In a HEALTHY body, best-case scenario, the body will break down the insulin and flush it out. But guess what it's broken down into? CHOLESTEROL. And in the process of "flushing", some of it sticks to your blood vessel walls. Get the picture? Now imagine this process happening over the course of 10, 20, 30 years' worth of Diet Cokes, and Equal/Sweet'n'Low/Splenda-infused coffees and teas. [ Reply | More ]

I did too until wised up. Besides the artificial sweeteners, the artificial colors and flavors are also doing nasty things to your body. And the carbonation isn't exactly the best thing, either. I hate to sound like a bore, but the best things to drink are water and iced teas (not that powdered or Arizona or Snapple crap, either -- FRESH BREWED unsweetened teas). Or fresh squeezed (NOT from a mix) lemonade ... sweetened with either real, old-fashioned sugar (just enough to cut the sourness) or succarat or agava nectar. [ Reply | More ]

The carbonation leeches calcium from their bones. This is bad for an adult, terrible for a child with growing bones. Carbonated beverages also burden the body by weakening stomach acid, thereby interfering with proper digestion. [ Reply | More ]
