Does anybody know about reputation about PS 124 and 130 G&T(D2)? Do they have strong academics? Majorities are Chinese? Our DC was accepted but difficult to commute so thinking about declining a spot. Too bad DC couldn't get in 116 or 11.... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

What's your zoned school? 124 and 130 are very very established solid programs with smart kids in the G&T. BUT most kids are chinese. [ Reply | More ]

These are "Chinese" schools (90%+ of DCs are Chinese). They have great math scores, but not so good ELA scores (I wonder why). I'm sure the academics are great. I would worry about social aspect if DC was not Asian [ Reply | More ]

Your facts are TOTALLY incorrect on ELA scores. "not so good ELA scores"? Please check the DOE site and report back that, for example in 2006, 124 had a HIGHER % of 4's (13.5%) than either PS234 and .2% lower than MNS (290)? Maybe in those years, 234 and 290 also had a bunch of Chinese that dragged the scores down? [ Reply | More ]

I spoke with a mom last year who had her caucasian son in the g&t for K. She said she would probably pull him out for first grade because being a minority was tough socially. Even in g&t, most kids were Chinese. I would personally not commute to go there if my child was not Chinese. Was that your third choice? [ Reply | More ]

116 and 11 are very popular in D2. Especially 116 required 98 to get in this year. I doubt pretty much 95 can get PS 11 either. [ Reply | More ]

OP: We live midtown west. To get to Chinatown, we have to cross town and go downtown. Like 45 min. commute. I don't know if it is worth it. [ Reply | More ]

BTW, OP: what do you mean by DC got into 130 and 124? They are two different schools. DC couldn't have gotten into both. Which one was it? [ Reply | More ]

It may easier to just go downtown and then walk over on Canal Street. Manhattan is narrower toward the bottom. The A, C, E, R and the #1 train all stop on Canal. [ Reply | More ]
