Your db needs *attention* and *supervision* (can you wait till she's asleep to do the dishes, or have someone else do them?) Please don't hit her, abandon her in her crib to cry, etc. Please spend time playing and interacting playfully and lovingly with her (yeah, more time). She needs you. Don't worry about the table. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

NP- YAAAY! That is seriously a wonderful, wonderful epiphany. I'm so glad you could get thru the neg responses you received & instead of being defensive, listened to the great advice up above. At that age (before 2 yrs) babies simply don't have the brain development to "remember" discipline so time outs don't "teach" them anything but not to trust you. You just have to be on top of them & redirect until they have the capacity to know "right" from "wrong" [ Reply | More ]

as the parent of a 19mo who loves to throw stuff (though thankfully it is mostly food. and milk/water), I totally understand and I'm totally sympathetic. to answer your question though -- it may be possible to "spot repair" a table but it will be better if the whole thing is refinished. depending on the number of "spots", I'd probably try spot repair first. hey, on the off chance you come back -- one of the ways you fix dings (dents NOT scratches) in a wood table is to use your iron. You put water in the dent, let it get absorbed by the wood, then put an iron on a damp cloth on it. The heat causes the water to expand. This causes the wood fiber to pop back into shape. But you would probably need to refinish the table afterwards. If this is a good table, I'd just wait and have the top done by a pro. If it is a good table, DON'T use wood putty on it now. That stuff is like glue and will make many future repairs/refinishing harder/impossible. [ Reply | More ]

She's going through alot of transitions. Try putting her back to bed in the morning- telling her it is still night time- she doesn't have to sleep but she needs to stay in bed. Keep doing it and she'll listen. [ Reply | More ]

Gordon doesn't do anything for me. But I do like those more British "G" names for boys. If I had had another ds, I would have named him Graham [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] After seeing the post about whether a dc in daycare can get into a private school for K, I have to wonder: what about a dc who does not go to school *or* daycare before K (or even 1st grade, since mandatory school age is 6 yo, as defined by NY State), a dc who is cared for by parents until that time. Is that child not able to apply to private school at all? That would be so absurd... (but then, this is NYC, and all things "school" seem absurd around here these days (I'm a native, and am still baffled)). Thoughts?... 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Can be done and it is diversity of sorts, but you better make sure your kid is exceptional if you do that. [ Reply | More ]

I can't imagine a private school in NYC taking a chance on a DC with no classroom experience whatsoever. They expect that the DCs who walk into their Ks know how to behave in a classroom already (raising hands, circle time, lining up to go to another room, etc.) things that aren't going to be learned at home, no matter how involved the parents are. I just don't see it happening. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. There would have to be extenuating circumstances as to why dc has not been in school previously, e.g., family is moving from a remote ranch in Wyoming or Kenya. Most kids entering private K have had at least 2 years of school 5 days a week. Some have 3 or 4 years. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: Wow, so a 5 or 6 yo without *years* of previous experience in a classroom setting would not be able to figure out how to raise h** hand, line up behind a classmate, sit next to one in a circle, or otherwise act appropriately in that setting. Do they (you) really believe that? And if that's true, is it the child or the setting that needs re-evaluating? [ Reply | More ]

np: i agree. I had no experience and was #1 in my HS class and graduated just shy of a 4.0 from college. It is all relative if the kid has a positive home life. Children that don't have that atmosphere, however, greatly benefit from pre-K/preschool. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't need to be "Years", it can be only one year of Pre-K, and I still don't see the schools, who already have more applicants than they can possibly handle, taking a chance like that. There is no need - unless that DC is the DC of the next Secretary General of the UN. [ Reply | More ]

it is interesting-we were out of town for the last month, and my dc attended a camp there. while doing pickup, one of the moms told me that this was the first time they had ever done any sort of drop off program. dc was 5. it was interesting-just so different from my nyc experience. not saying either way is better or worse, but people do find what works for them [ Reply | More ]

my 2.5 y.o. skips nap occasionally. she can't do it without an evening meltdown but i can't force her to sleep. i can only make her lay down. she sleeps about 11- 12 hrs at night but she needs a daytime nap. we all pay for it when she doesn't get one. [ Reply | More ]

how do you get her to even lay down - my 2.5yo skips naps more and more and even trying to get him to do quiet time without sleeping can erupt in tantrums. [ Reply | More ]

interestingly, she always had to cry her head off for about 15 min. to nap. but then dh moved her into a big girl bed over the weekend. i didn't think she was ready but she has gone to bed and nap with no fuss ever since. like i said, she doesn't necc. sleep. she has a couple stuffed animals and books and entertains herself with those.
