SIL is such a jerk. We are having a party for our db inviting both my family and dh's family. SIL (dh's bro wife) says that we shouldn't have her 17 yr sit at the kids table b/c she is going to college next year... and that we have to have another cake for her other daughter's sweet sixteen since her birthday is the same month of our kid.. i am not opposed the cake idea but i want to add my niece and nephew names to the same cake..she says we should have a separate cake for my side of the family..wtf ?!!?!?!?!? tell her you are happy to add names to the cake you are getting. she needs to bring her own if she wants a separate cake. also - your house - your seating arrangement. but the 17 y.o. would prob appreciate being included as an adult. [ Reply | More ]

np: Is your SIL paying the tab? If not, you know what they say. "No pay, no say" [ Reply | More ]

or: i guess my point is that at 17, she probably doesn't consider herself a kid. my 16 y.o. niece certainly doesn't. that said, she loves to babysit and enjoys being around her younger cousins. i don't see what being at a restaurant has to do with where the teen sits unless it's about not wanting to pull up another table to accomodate her. ITA - I would imagine the 17yo would be fine at the kids table, and will be helpful with little ones [ Reply | More ]

do you have to listen to her ? Do what you want and realize that the battle is for your DH as it's his family. The party is yours though. Do what you want. [ Reply | More ]

It's your party. She is invited and welcome to attend, not to dictate the terms and conditions. Do whatever you want with the cake or cakes. Seat people wherever you want. I'm 32 and still sit at the kids table at some family events. Hardly a big deal/ [ Reply | More ]

Were my aunts and uncles supposed to get larger dining room tables just because my cousins and I grew up? No! It's still my parents, aunts, and uncles at one table and my cousins and I at a folding table. [ Reply | More ]

sounds like she is totally trying to hijack your party. I would give a firm shove back and tell her that she needs to back off a bit so that you both can reach a compromise. [ Reply | More ]

well, the second cake thing is ridiculous, but i actually think a 17 yo (and a 16 yo, for that matter) should sit with the grownups, unless there are other like-aged kids at the kid table. when i think kids' table, i think it's for the under 10 crowd. [ Reply | More ]
