Ours usually goes fine, but DS (my oldest) can be tough sometimes. If either of them start popping out or trying to extend it too long I put them back in bed saying "it's bedtime, we stay in bed & sleep" and a kiss. Any time after that that they come out I just say nothing and put them back to bed. I had one time with DS I had to put him back a number of times, but it totally works.
