it is OK. best thing for my kids. it's hard as hell as a parent, goes against everything you think you are supposed to do, but honestly, we have 4 yo twins who are amazing sleepers, and for one CIO was the only way to get her there. she was fitfull sleeper and so hard to put down to sleep frmo day, when she was old enough, we did cio and she became happier during teh day because she was getting better solid sleep. here is the thing you need to tell yourseld once you start though, if you start and then quit after 10 minutes, you really have just tortured your child, so when you start it, you need to commit to continue until he/she falls asleep. i would sit in the room on the floor so my baby could see me, because that was the only way i felt less quilty, but you need to be ready. i think the word willful and "4 yo" are synonyms. for me, it involves a lot of refusing to listen or continue the conversation when i'm being screamed or whined at. if i threaten a punishment, i follow thru. if i lose my temper, i apologize. [ Reply | More ]

Be firm and consistent--like, ridiculously consistent. And as calm as you can possibly be. Things are getting better here as DS gets older (he's 6 now). He is bright, interesting, funny, handsome--but the strongest willed person I have ever, ever met. We call him Jack Bauer because you can't make him do a damn thing. But, as I said, getting better. Staying calm is key (and not at all easy, I know). [ Reply | More ]

That's absurd. We love Westhampton. They have tons of stuff to do for the kids, free concerts, theatre camps, library events etc., the commute is quite good and it is very laid back and family oriented. The 'scene' is lacking but that's more than fine with us. [ Reply | More ]

It's funny, but I know people with - by NYC standards - not that much income and not that high a net worth, who live fairly frugally (by choice) and as a result have managed to put themselves in this situation. I think past a certain point, it's more about what you spend and less about what you have/make. [ Reply | More ]

ITD. If you ever have to worry about money, you are not incredibly wealthy. If you save a nice nest egg, but have to worry about staying insurable so you don't run up millions of dollars in medical bills if there is a catastrophic injury or illness, you are not IMO, incredibly wealthy.
