[ - ] I'm probably admitting this for the first time, but marrying 'up' has proven to be really challenging for me. My dh and I just delivered our first and I find things just so confusing. My db is 1 week old now, and my mil insists that I go ahead and commit to hiring the baby nurse they suggested so that everything works out with our new db. For the life of me, though, I can't quite figure out why I need it. Dh feels that either way is fine, but I can tell he thinks mom could be right. Really, I feel like I don't know what I'd be paying for. I had never even heard of it until his family started talking to me about the new baby. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I didn't want one either. Some woman can't handle newborns. It is YOUR choice. You are the mommy and it has little to do with money. [ Reply | More ]

op: Really? I thought it was really expensive to not have anything to do with money. It would have cost us $1500 per week. [ Reply | More ]

I did just fine without a baby nurse. I'm not the kind of person who likes other people in my space. Do what you want to do. I wanted to spend the time with db, without anybody else except for dh. [ Reply | More ]

I was on the fence about needing a baby nurse but was so happy we had one! I was nursing, and my boobs were hanging out and she did not care. She was a lifesaver for us the first 3 weeks, but everyone has different needs. [ Reply | More ]

I came from 'old money' and my mom had a baby nurse for all her children (3), and other help. It was what they did. But, when I had my first and someone suggested it, I felt the same way you did. Do what you want and hire a caretaker when or if you need one. I wanted to be my db's mom full time. It was exhausting and sometimes scary, but it was the best thing I've ever done. Good luck and congrats! [ Reply | More ]

That's it -- it's super WASPy and gorgeous and relaxed (in a WASP sort of way!). There is a tiny general store (and everyone has charge accounts like in the old days) and you ride bikes everywhere. Everyone knows everyone. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What are some good ideas for weekend activities for 5-year-old girl who would rather stay inside than go out? She is quite shy and doesn't really like playdates either. She always says that she wants to stay in, but has recently began complaining about being "bored" inside. It is like pulling teeth to get her out and she generally enjoys herself once out, but I am starting to dread the weekends. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

how about programs at the Zoo (Bronx or the Central Park), children's science museum in Jersey, movies, sprinkler parks, pool, beach. Ugh, I was the same way when I was a kid. I was always telling my mother I was bored. She used to tell me to dust. I stopped asking her. God, I was a pain in the butt! [ Reply | More ]

Try things that are planned out. Eg art class for the fall. Something where there might be some social interaction like soccer. But get your dd's input on what she would like, but she has to pick something. [ Reply | More ]

think of some science projects she can do outside. like going out at 1pm and tracing her shadow and then going out again at 6pm and tracing her shadow and then comparing the two. think of specific things for her to do or specific errands to run, rather than a generic "let's go to the park". There is a family/kids art/nature workshop-year round- at Wave Hill on Saturdays and Sundays. It's free w/admission, open to all and happens indoors at a beautiful place. The beauty of it is- you get to share space with other people while enjoying an an individual project. It's a good warm-up to group settings and right outside are hills, gardens and space to run around and explore. My 'slow to warm up' kid has had some very broadening days and made instant playmates in that setting. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] OMG. Tell me I did the right thing. My 93 sweet neighbor lost control of his car and hit my neighbor's tree. (He hit the accelerator in reverse instead of brake). While I was in my driveway, watching the whole thing, I had to yell at my children to get in the house as I wasn't sure where he was driving to backwards. When he finally rolled to a stop due to severe damage to his tire, I asked him to put his car in park. He was shaken up and said I can't. I asked to take his keys out, he did. I asked him who I can call him for him, he said nobody, and proceeded to restart the car. I told him to stop, he shouldn't drive and if he did I was going to call the police. He begged me to not to call the police, but he drove back instead to his house, two houses down. I called the police and a tiny part of me thinks I should have dealt with it provately with his wife. I did the right thing, I know but feel teensy bit guilty since he's a sweet old man. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think you are very nice but I'd notify the police and any family he may have. Let the police handle it but keep in mind what may happen the next time he does this, and he'll do it again. There may be a medical problem you never know. [ Reply | More ]

You can do that at Sinai, but basically only if you do most of your labor at home and get to the hospital very late in the game. The epi is your call, but they will almost certainly get some pitocin in you if you go there in early or even active labor, which makes it much harder to do without the epi. Hire a doula, and you can do it! BTDT. [ Reply | More ]

I think that's great! Just think how happy his future DW will be that he knows not to just leave his cup/beer/soda any old place. Now, if you can just redirect him to walk it over to the sink rather than you (or future dw), you'll have raised quite a catch. ;) [ Reply | More ]
