[ - ] How would you react on a date if the guy picked up clams on the half shell and tilted his head, sliding them in directly from the shell? this happened to me and I was freaked out by lack of etiquette. am I too uptight about manners? 25 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

That's a traditional way to eat oysters and clams. But, if I was at Daniel or another type of high-etiquette restaurant I might not like it. How were his manners, otherwise? [ Reply | More ]

Why crass? How do you eat oysters, is there any other way? I hate clams and usually use fork for mussels but always suck on the oysters. [ Reply | More ]

Were these clams on the half shell or did he reach into a bowl of bouillabaisse? Cause if the former, that is how he should have eaten them. [ Reply | More ]

yes, you are uptight. That is the normal way to eat claims on the half shell. I would find it odd if a man used the dainty little fork to eat claims on the half shell. And I'm from New England where claims on the half shell are served everywhere. [ Reply | More ]

If the clams were on the half shell (as you said) and preshucked (loose) so that he didn't have to slurp, then he was perfectly correct in sliding them into his mouth. The little fork is for fishing meat out of shellfish, i.e. lobster/crab claws, steamed mussels not to use like a fork in your mouth - that' s what I was taught in finishing school. Hope that helps. This would pretty much be a turn on for me if I was into the guy. This is how they are eaten. I can't stand men who are over the top polite with fork and knife only when dining. You'd want him to eat ribs and chicken wings with fork & knife? I want a man who can dig in and chew the bone! Suck the clam! YOu know he's more likely to be interested and good at going downtown and that's a very important quality. [ Reply | More ]
