How would you react on a date if the guy picked up clams on the half shell and tilted his head, sliding them in directly from the shell? this happened to me and I was freaked out by lack of etiquette. am I too uptight about manners? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yes, you are uptight. That is the normal way to eat claims on the half shell. I would find it odd if a man used the dainty little fork to eat claims on the half shell. And I'm from New England where claims on the half shell are served everywhere. [ Reply | More

If the clams were on the half shell (as you said) and preshucked (loose) so that he didn't have to slurp, then he was perfectly correct in sliding them into his mouth. The little fork is for fishing meat out of shellfish, i.e. lobster/crab claws, steamed mussels not to use like a fork in your mouth - that' s what I was taught in finishing school. Hope that helps. This would pretty much be a turn on for me if I was into the guy. This is how they are eaten. I can't stand men who are over the top polite with fork and knife only when dining. You'd want him to eat ribs and chicken wings with fork & knife? I want a man who can dig in and chew the bone! Suck the clam!
