[ - ] yikes - just googled dh and saw a website from his rainier expedition 9 years ago. he didn't tell me he was in a white-out at the summit. lovely. he is NOT going again. clearly his judgement is not stellar at high altitudes. not his expedition, but they lost a few climbers on Rainier that year. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

For a few months a year we use that outlet for an air conditioner, and the wire runs along the wall where we would put the bed. [ - ] Um, currently clueless single dad here. Can anyone point me to a good educational source on city wide G&T programs like Hunter, Anderson, NEST etc, or just a simple idiot's guide to acronyms like TAG, SB etc? I am trying to educate myself on 3.5 yo daughter's public school options - she's currently in a private pre-school on the UES but I would like explore public school for next year. We live in Harlem (but District 3). I read through posts here but overwhelmed by the acronyms (I'm a quant. analyst and I thought we had acronyms) and just want a pre-Google place to start. Thanks a lot. 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I have no idea why people are being nasty to you. Anyway-- all of this might change but there are 4 gifted schools that are not within district lines (citywides) Hunter (Manhattan only) is NOT run by the DOE therefore the testing process is completely different. You must go to the Hunter website to get the testing information. The 3 other schools: NEST (in the LES) Anderson (in the UWS and TAG (in Harlem) you must take a test called the OLSAT administered by the DOE. That same test is used to determine whether you can enter one of the District Gifted & Talented schools. In PS 3 you have some good options, PS 9 being the favorite--- BUT the competition for these is insane. Next you want to check out what your zoned school is. Sometimes you might be pleasantly surprised. There are also lottery schools mike Manhattan School for Children. These don't involve tests-- just luck. Inside Schools.org is a good place to start. Here's the link to the DOE site for G&T applications. I would check this regularly in the fall to make sure you are up to date with deadlines. http://schools.nyc.gov/Academics/GiftedandTalented/EligibilityApplications/default.htm. Also, UB, although people can be grumpy is a decent source for up to the minute news on the process as it is unfolding. [ Reply | More ]

TAG is the the Talented and Gifted School in Harlem -- one of the three citywide gifted and talented schools, along with Anderson and NEST. The best source of info on publics is insideschools.org. Read the descriptions of the schools and look at the latest on the G&T process. SB is the Stanford Binet test, which is only required for Hunter and is administered by Hunter-approved child psychologists who specialize in testing young children (Hunter provides a list when you apply and you choose one). The OLSAT (otis lennon school ability test) along with the Bracken (also referred to as BRSA) were the tests required this year for DOE gifted & talented process. The tests are administered by public school teachers who have gone through a brief training session. For kindergarten, the test is one-on-one with the teacher. This year, the Hunter cut-off was 98th percentile on the SB. The DOE cut-off for citywides was 97th percentile and 90th percentile for district G&T programs. Please post if you have additional questions. [ Reply | More ]

Dude, I would look closely at after school options in making this decision too. Obviously I'm jumping the gun here but not all schools are equal in their after school programming. NEST (where my boy is in K) has after school programming (for a fee) till 6pm every day. It is nice if you have a 9-5 because your kid is with the same population. (Granted it would be a really long day.) We like NEST but, as you will see once you are doing your research, the commute there sucks. [ Reply | More ]

Get the Clara Hemphill book "Best Public Elementary Schools" (available in bookstores or on the inside schools website). It's a great resource, not updated as frequently as inside schools website but more comprehensive. If you're in D3 you can try for the good D3 gen eds that have spaces available by lottery (Manhattan School for Children, PS 87). Also - if your child is musical, consider the Special Music School. The UB crowd mostly skews towards private, so keep that in mind when asking for advice here. [ Reply | More ]
