it's not a linear eqation. There are many many parts to this problem. A huge part of it is that China and India are growing and demanding more oil. If we had our own supply - even partially - it would help keep the prices down. Oil companies make right around 8 cents a gallon. The gov't makes areound 17 cents a gallon. It's not greedy oil execs causing this. You sound simple minded [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 06.03.08, 11:22 AM Flag

we agree then. Congress is simpleminded and depends on the miseducation of americans and the fact that so many of us have such wealth envy. That's what all the "tax the rich" programs are all about. Every time you hear a congress person say "they can spare it" or "they don't need it" stop and think! They are baiting you. They are trying to make rich people somehow responsible for every ill in society. Its just not true. There are many many factors to gas prices being so high and I'll admit I am not an expert. But - I do know it's more complicated than evil rich greedy oil execs. A big part of the problem is our country's polices like I said above [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.03.08, 11:28 AM Flag

but lack of policies begot unchecked greed. this is a huge part of it. there are no other factors that really necessitate the price hike, i.e. there's no shortage crisis. sometimes economic issues ARE simple. supply/demand. the supply and demand have remained the same. only this is a demand americans are never going to back off of, and hence the price can go as high as it wants. the only correct statement bush ever made was that we are addicted to fuel. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.03.08, 11:31 AM Flag

but demand has climbed and astronomically. China and India are consuming more and more eveyr year. That is putting huge pressure on the system. I haev even heard rumors that oil in the middle east is going to run out (of course we always knew it would someday, but sooner than previously thought) that means supply and demand are coming into play here. And let's not forget that many countries in OPEC are not really friends of the US. They probably love seeing us squirm. Like I said - there are many many factors to this. I am not saying that greed and that kind of thing have no effect. But when people start talking about greedy oil execs - as if that is the only thing causing this - I see red. It's just not that simple and the whole congressional calling execs to testofy thing is just a big show to pacify people who don't know any better [ Reply | More ]

That was my point. I started buying gas in 1980 and can remember when it went to $1/gal.
