Well - I don't know your price range but if you can't afford to be in Buckhead or in the more trendy areas then I'd find a good suburb and make sure his office is there. Are you an NYCer? Atlanta may be a shock - so sprawled out and terrible horrible traffic. But if you can work and live in the city it may be kind of cool. I think Decatur is good - an unincorporated area that is surrounded by Atlanta proper. [ Reply | More ]

I grew up in Buckhead and it is lovely, if a bit "old school" after living in NYC for 20 years...although there are sections where young families live. The Highlands is nice, too. My niece lives in Decatur, which used to be a no-man's land when I was young, but now is great. You could try Sandy Springs as well, and Roswell is also very nice, but farther out. Everyone is right about the traffic...it is awful. Take that into account, whatever you do. It is a lovely city in many ways, though not as exciting as NYC, but the people are great and it's very diverse. [ Reply | More ]

Most important is where his job is. If it is intown, stay intown b/c of traffic. Buckhead is good. VA Highlands can be a bit young and seedy/crime in parts. If you like that area, look in Morningside instead. Some people also like the Emory/North Druid Hills area. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter is open to the public, but it is run by Hunter College, not the NYC DOE. So it has the freedom to design its own curriculum and select its classes. You take the Stanford Binet to qualify, and if score high enough, go to a 2nd round evaluation in person. Anderson is a DOE school open to kids from all 5 boroughs who score high enough (chosen by lottery). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] As you have likely heard, a number of public PreK applicants who should have received priority (siblings of older kids already enrolled at that school; zoned kids rejected, while out-of-zone and out-of-district kids were accepted) did not get spots in this year's PreK admissions. As spots are limited in general, some schools simply have more sibling or zoned applicants than there are spots for, but that is not the matter at issue. If you know of anyone in this situation (anywhere in NYC!) please ask them to complete this survey as we (parents of rejected kids) attempt to get a handle on the scope & outreach thus far. While both Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum & City Councilman Bill De Blasio called a press conference yesterday demanding the DOE deal with the situation, we have yet to have a proper response from the DOE as a group or individually. They have told the press they will find suitable spots for wrongly rejected kids, but these spots may be in a school elsewhere in one's district. That is unacceptable. PLEASE PASS ON OUR POST THIS SURVEY: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=0B4Y3u5DSXKj4qsF7gptpA_3d_3d Many thanks, Mom to rejected twin and accepted twin (although no letter yet) at big sis' school 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You are being very silly. The high maintenance could be indicative of a problem and you want to have an inspection to make sure that there aren't any major structural problems, which I would fear considering the low price, the fact that the seller wants to close soon, and the high maintenance. It doesn't take long to hire an inspector or to schedule one. [ Reply | More ]

I have bought 4 homes in 8 years. Did not do an inspection on first and had lots of problems with roof. Did do an inspection on second and had lots of problems with roof. Did an inspection on 3rd and did not have any real surprises. Did inspection on 4th and did not reveal anything I wasn't expecting. What I am saying is - inspection is only as good as the inspector and even then there are things they can't tell you because they don't know what is behind the walls. It's a roll of the dice. They can tell you age and life expectancy of mechanicals and things like that so you will know when you have to buck up to replace that stuff...but other than that you kind of need to know that you are going to have to spend a lot usually on stuff you did not expect to for repairs. I say save the $ on inspection and save it for repairs. [ Reply | More ]
