[ - ] Before I say this let me just point out that I am NOT a genius or gifted or anything more than a normal woman with a decent but not spectacular college w/ a BA and nothing more. I'm a nice person but not a genius. I have a kid who is freakishly smart. At this point in time, anyway. She is a 99X3 on SB, OLSAT and ERB, the SB being high 99 and the OLSAT being 2 BSRA questions wrong and 100% OLSAT. I honestly believe that she needs to be in an accelerated program (NEST or Anderson). I honestly believe that her needs will not be met at a normal G&T. I'm not putting down anyone or anything. Really. I'm just being honest when I say that my 4 year old is ready for 1st or 2nd grade work and she needs an accellerated program. So should she not get NEST or Anderson (and honestly I don't know what I'll do if it's NEST because I have a baby and a p/t job and we live in the W 100's!!!!) what can I do for her outside? We don't have a lot of money but I could certainly put a small portion of our funds towards extra curriculars for her or tutors. So without trashing her childhood, what kinds of things are there OUTSIDE of school for a kid like this? TIA. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You really shouldn't worry about it UNLESS it becomes a problem. I was one of those freaky children - and did just fine in regular classes until middle school (then went to special gifted). There is nothing wrong with having the reading, math come easy in K and first grade. It is only todays parents that think that a child should be challenged at five, and work to the utmost level of their potential every second of every day. IF and I do really mean IF - your dc has a problem in K, then address it. But don't anticipate one. She may very well do just great and be happy and make friends and do workbooks at home because she likes them (or not). The K year - with no problems and no "enrichment" with not stop her from reaching her potential as an adult. Don't get me wrong, I am aware of all the research - but my main point is, if it ain't broke - don't fix it. Wait and see what you end up having to deal with. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

yes. We do 1st grade reading workbooks, she reads beginer chapter books and we do 2nd grade math workbooks. She can read anything at all, even the newspaper, but cannot comprehend the meaning of what she has read. With the begining chapter books she understands the story. [ Reply | More ]

np. Relax. Mine was reading books like Charlotte's Web with comprehension the summer before she started K, doing simple multiplication and algebra. DC is at a "TT" ongoing that's very gentle in the early years, and it has been fine. I won't tell you boredom has never been an issue. It has. But I think it's useful for kids to learn to cope with boredom in small doses, and most of the time it's not an issue. Odds are your DC will be fine. Most of them are. [ Reply | More ]

My dd got the same OLSAT score as your dd. She will do just fine in a District G&T for the early years. Of course, it would be great if she got into Anderson but I'm not expecting it. I feel she would do just fine in our zoned school also, but the G&T offers smaller class size, better arts and a peer group of kids who can handle the material well. [ Reply | More ]

If your dc got 99.9 on SB, I think even Anderson may not be appropriate. Visit www.hoagiesgifted.org and there is a gifted board at Babycenter where parents of PG kids hang out and discuss their lack of options. Honestly, above OR's have no idea what they're talking about. PG kids (if your dc is one) WILL def'ly run into issues at school if they're only 1 grade accelerated. I think, ideally, you want a school where dc can be self-paced. Even EG kids (99th percentile but below 99.9) are expected to finish HS curriculum by 8th grade if they had the chance - my dc is one (also 99 on SB/ERB/Olsat). If you can afford it, private school that is progressive and more self paced makes sense (not traditional schools). At public schools, you will need cooperation from the admin to do work that is 4-5 grades ahead. I assume your dc is already reading at 3rd grade level at least? Most research show 1 grade accel'n is NOT enough. You have a tough decision to make and not many choices... Progressive school is best, imo. Structured school where kids drill will make her miserable. A place where dc can go into more depth on a subject is ideal. [ Reply | More ]

I agree completely with posters who say your 4 yo does not NEED to be challenged at this age. You have no idea what her NEEDS are yet -- she's only 4!! school is about so many more things than just reading level, and scores. Let her just be a kid and find her passions. [ Reply | More ]

The first was a surprise, the second was planned and he was insistent that we keep having more. We were happy, we have great kids and he is the perfect father. [ - ] I need some advice from the single (or formerly single) moms out there. I have a 6yo dd, 5yo dd and 3yo ds. For the last 9 months I have been dating a man much young than me (I am 34 and he is 24). I really hadn't anticipated anything seriousy ever developing, but after a few dates we stopped seeing anyone else. I only introduced him to my children a month and a half ago and lately he has been talking marriage. I love him, I truly do, but I just worry about the difference in age and his getting so caught up in a woman with children, divorced and older. He has discussed having children together and having a big family and being a father to my children as well. It all sounds right, but at 24 I just don't know - do you think he will change his mind in a few years after seeing what the life is like? I'm sorry, it's just been on my mind so much since we had a long serious conversation about it all two nights ago. This just isn't what I expected my life to be at my age I guess. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Think back to 10 years ago and what you were doing/thinking at 24 yo. Now, thibk back at least 3 more years and that is probably what stage in life he is in right now. Hate to be so pessimistic, but at 24 yo, unless he is truly 1 in a million, there is no way he is really "ready" for all of this. Best of luck though! [ Reply | More ]

i agree with the previous poster - as much as he thinks he can handle it, 24 is still an age where great change is happening in a person - when i was 24 i was still out partying, dating around, i wasn't ready for marriage and family until my early thirties [ Reply | More ]

I think you are irresponsible for letting him and your children begin a relationship when you are not sure about the future with him. [ Reply | More ]

I want to marry him, I do. I want him to be in my life forever, but lately I have just been worried that I am laying such a weight on his shoulders with having a family already. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am going to a baby shower this weekend for a woman who is pregnant wtih her third child - the baby currently only weights about 2 pounds and hasn't been growing. Is it just me or does the baby shower just seem inappropriate considering she has two kids already and this pregnancy doesn't seem to be going well. I don't even know what to get and the shower is on Sunday. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

a baby shower is supposed to help set up a new mom with all the stuff she might need. a shower for a non-new mom is just in poor taste - it smacks of greed. in addition, showers are usually given within month of due date. i find the jewish attitude towards this very pragmatic (they don't do baby showers) - "god forbid something should happen to the baby before it is born". yes, i agree with that ideal - i just dont want to chance it so i'd rather have my shower after the baby is born and then everyone can see her too! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I found out last weekend that my dh has been having an affair the past year. I am still coming to terms with it and i was curious if anyone else has been through this or been the one having the affair. What is your story? 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My ex-dh had an affair with a young neighbor of ours' for about 6 months before I was aware. At the time, he and I had been married for 11 years and our dd's were 10 and 9. I kicked him out of the house a week after finding out, we went to therapy, but he just didn't want to be in the marriage anymore. We filed for divorce and I am now happily remarried for two years to my wonderful dh with a 2yo dd and a baby on the way! It will get better, but it is going to take a long time so just stay strong these next few months. How old are your kids? How long have you been married? [ Reply | More ]
