[ - ] Public education in NYC in 2008 is inferior to that proposed by Thomas Jefferson in 1778. As per his words: , those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny; and it is believed that the most effectual means of preventing this would be, to illuminate, as far as practicable, the minds of the people at large, and more especially to give them knowledge of those facts, which history exhibiteth, that, possessed thereby of the experience of other ages and countries, they may be enabled to know ambition under all its shapes, and prompt to exert their natural powers to defeat its purposes; At every of these schools shall be taught reading, writing, and common arithmetick, and the books which shall be used therein for instructing the children to read shall be such as will at the same time make them acquainted with Graecian, Roman, English, and American history...In these grammar schools shall be taught the Latin and Greek languages, English grammar, geography, and the higher part of numerical arithmetick, to wit, vulgar and decimal fractions, and the extraction of the square and cube roots. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes on all counts. You are grossly misinformed about what really IS taught in NYC's best public schools. Plus, I really don't think that an exact replica of an 18th century education really addresses the needs of people here in the 21st. Education was by rote back then and only for the elite. Real public education didn't come into being until well into the 19th century and even then it was often minimal. [ Reply | More ]

My 6th grader has studied Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Chinese history, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome this year. My older dc has had two years of very detailed US history from pre-Columbian times to the present. [ - ] Live on UES in PS 290, accepted to PS 11 G&T (3rd choice I believe). Is it worth the trek down/over to Chelsea or is 290 the better choice? Score was 93 although diagnosed a month after test w/ various eye problems, now wears glasses (far sighted, astigmatism, cross-eyed) so potentially would have scored higher w/ glasses (won't know as they refused to re-test him). Also, I didn't know anything about PS 11 before reading the great comments on these boards. LL was the only one I toured and hoped to get into (1st choice). 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

11 has small class size. It has a pool, but they don't swim until second grade. IF you can handle the commute, try it. If you hate it, you can always go back to zoned. Why not practice the commute for the next two mornings and see if you can do it? [ Reply | More ]

what are your concerns? that he will underperform and be dropped out of G&T program? You can always put him into a zoned school [ Reply | More ]

No, he's extremely bright which is why I was pushing to get him re-tested even before knowing the score, once he got glasses. The concern is getting him down there every day. The can't guarantee busing and even if he is bused, they'd probably be picking him up before 7am to get him to school on time. I have a 2 year old to get to nursery school so it would be very difficult to bring him back and forth every day... especially since our plan B is a very good zoned school. [ Reply | More ]

My other thought is this... if he goes to 290 this year, he can re-test in 1st grade. With the glasses perhaps he'll test in to LL or a citywide. I know this year there's a handful of 1st grade spots available (at LL) from families who are moving. If he goes to 11, I don't know if he can move to another G&T, just perhaps a citywide if he qualifies. [ Reply | More ]

honestly, you should feel lucky to get into 11g&T with a 93, and I am surprised you hoped to get into LL or 116 or even 11 with that score. you really should have done your homework. [ Reply | More ]

I think a lot of people on these boards don't understand the G&T program. If you score over a 90 and rank all the schools in your district, you're guaranteed a spot in one of the G&T's you've ranked. Except for the city wides, they all take kids with an array of scores over 90. I feel lucky that DS got a 93 with his vision problems which were undetected at the time of the test and lucky that he was guaranteed a G&T spot. That said, I don't feel lucky that we were offered 11 because in some people's opinions he didn't score well enough to get in. There's a reason the baseline score is 90 and above, all are potentially bright and high achieving children. Also, all G&T programs are basically the same... they all follow the same curriculum (except the city wides). It certainly was not a ridiculous hope that he'd get into LL... it's one of the district G&T schools that he was guaranteed to get into! [ Reply | More ]

yes, but the cutout rate was reduced to 90 from 95 because of low scoring kids in other boroughs. if you are so well informed, you should have had a fair assessment of your chances of getting into one of the best district g&T and should have toured it. i have a sympathy for your kid with his health issues, but you as a mom should have done a better job researching your options if you started to play this whole G&T game. and they don't follow the same curriculum ,they have the same curriculum as the regular program in their gen ed school, but for example, ps 11 has piano classes for K, and 116, for example, does not. What is your problem? Geez. NP here. Problem I see with the G&T is that only the kids who have high achieving parents that can maneuver through all the paper work etc. get the spots. What happens to the bright inner city kids here? [ Reply | More ]

PS 290 (Manhattan New School) is arguably the best public school on the UES. I have not visited PS 11 and left messages today inquiring about doing so (no response yet). As for the arguing poster above, all the G&T's do follow the basic curriculum in NYC... sure some may have art where others have piano, but for the most part the basic education is the same. I didn't tour all 7 of the schools that I HAD TO rank to be guaranteed a spot because I didn't think I'd go to any if they were as far away as most are, including 11. But now that we have the offer, I'm researching all my options, as a good parent would. If I didn't have 2 kids and a hundred other things going on in my life, perhaps I would have toured all 7 schools even knowing that most of them I would decline anyway. By the way, I'm sure most of the parents of the kids "in other boroughs" would be glad to hear your opinion that 90-95 is "low scoring". And I guess no one in Manhattan is in that range? Besides my DS of course! [ Reply | More ]

We are at 11 G&T and love it. It's a great school and they have a swimming pool (swimming starts in 2nd grade). I don't know that it is worth it to commute to 11 from the UES though. We live by 11 and although I never toured 290, I know I wouldn't commute my dc to 290 no matter how good it was since 11 is fine with us. [ Reply | More ]

The only reason we'd do the commute is the fact that it's a G&T program vs. a zoned school program. I've heard wonderful things about 290 but I've heard bad things about the zoned schools' testing in 3rd grade and above and how they tend to go downhill at that point. My hope is that if we pass on 11 now, we can re-test next year and get into LL or someplace closer... I really believe had he been tested with his glasses it would have made a huge difference. His nursery school teachers commented how he was bright to begin with but they saw a world of differnce in him once he had glasses. I think it's so unfair they wouldn't re-test him from the get go... I requested it even before knowing his score! [ Reply | More ]
