[ - ] leaving public for private and here are my thoughts about the public school parents: typically older, wealthier than you might think, very competitive, but appear low key, obsessed with their kids' giftedness, obsessed with the DOE and what they are entitled to, obsessed with fairness, although they want more than the disenfranchised, and typically have it, seemingly left wing, but actually quite conservative. We decided after a shot at public to take our dd to a private school. we will not miss the fake liberals. at least private schools own up to who they are. GL everyone! 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You can only generalize to a certain extent. I have dc in public and private. Public school moms tend to be obsessed with fairness. They hate the idea that anyone is getting more than they are. They feel the DOE ignores them and their children's needs, which is just a statement of fact. Many are completely focussed on what their individual children need, and don't take a broader view. The nicer ones are wimps and passive and the crazy ones are activisits (see Yeats). Everyone is defensive about how smart and gifted their child is; the system ranks and rejects kids starting from preschool, the choices are limited and a lot of them aren't that godo; the curricula dont' really reflect wwhat the the parents think their kids should learn; no wonder, the atmosphere is less than wonderful. [ - ] All of this talk of overpopulation, I just don't get it. Is that what it has come to? Loving parents having more than 2 children is irresponsible? I have always wanted three children - and I have two boys and a girl on the way. I do not see a problem with a family that can handle caring for multiple children doing just that. Not everyone is emotionally capable of adopting - it is far more than just giving a child a home. You have to bond with the child, you have many difficult areas of conversation ahead of you, it is incredible responsibility that not everyone is prepared for. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
