have two brothers taught me that boys like to wrestle. sometimes the younger one will instigate and then scream his head off like he's being murdered when the older one tackles him to the ground. And my brothers were 5 years apart! Now I have two boys 5 yrs apart, and can just see what I'm in for. It's going to be a loooong 18 years or so. [ Reply | More ]

sorry I disapeared. DD needed something. No, it's not ruining my family life but it's hard when I feel so distant from him sometimes. He doesn't seem to get it that I need him. I need to be able to talk to him and not have to cram everything I need to say to him into 10 minutes after DD goes to bed. Really frustrating. He does work but he is lazy about it wants to call in sick a lot probably to sit around and smoke we fight about that. if ILs die first, yes. But if DH dies before ILs, no. My FIL died many years ago. When his parents died, money went to DH and his brothers. MIL got nothing from her IL's estate. [ Reply | More ]

I have a 7 yo boy so I can picture this: bouncing a basketball for 20 minuntes or throwing a tennis ball against a wall repeatedly and then catching it in a mitt, then getting a bit bored so climbing up on a piece of furniture, like the bed or coffee table and seeing if he can jump off and touch the ceiling, then landing on the ground. Then jumping up and down to see how high he can jump without jumping off the furniture the deciding to go back to his basketball dribbling. When it stops for good do you hear "MOM! I'm SO BORED?" [ - ] I am wondering if anyone with a child with low muscle tone (hypotonia) has any suggestions for extra curricular activities for their young child to encourage improvement. Almost 4 yo gets PT once a week, fatigues and gets discouraged easily. I was thinking of gymnastics or maybe tae kwon do as opposed to a team activity for the fall. Any suggestions or experiences? Yeah! And during the summer, see if you can introduce her to just splashing around in the pool so she thinks of it as a fun place to be and not scary. [ Reply | More ]

We are starting martial arts with our DS who has dyspraxia, which is different but also discourages DS from doing team sports. Our therapist recommended this over gymnastics (unless in a SN gym) because kids are less likely to notice that DS is lagging behind. Also recommended guitar or piano for fine motor, but not sure if your child needs this. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for this suggestion. I had been considering tae kwon do as well. My daughter has been to birthday parties at the place where they have the gymnastics so I thought it might be good because she's familiar with the environment (she has other developmental delays that make transitions challenging.) I may see if she can sit in on a martial arts class to see if would be appealing to her. I think the appeal of tae kwon do is that it focuses on large muscle groups which would help improve her gross motor. Thanks for the music suggestions--fine motor is also something we are trying to address. [ Reply | More ]

^^the gym is not a SN gym, so I will definitely take your suggestions under advisement, as well as the consideration that martial arts may be a better individualized activity over gymnastics. Thank you, and everyone, so much for the suggestions! [ Reply | More ]
