[ - ] A few weeks back I discussed my list of ongoing schools for application in the fall. You guys were really helpful (believe it or not)! A bunch of you suggested the boys schools -- Buckley, St. D's, St. B's, AS, Browning. I have some questions about them. First off, are the first three really as traditional and formal as they sound? Would a Jewish family, upper middle class from the UWS feel comfortable there? What about the last two? Just how religious are the two Sts. Any info appreciated. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You'd probably feel fine at ps 87, if you don't mind mixing with the not-so-upper middle class. [ Reply | More ]

It was in K this year. 60 families were officially from out of zone, and at least 20 others are faking the zone. That's out of 150. [ Reply | More ]

That's still a lot. But that was absolutely not true in K this year, and I don't know what it will be like next year. Of the figures above, the 60 is a fact, the 20 is an estimate. I think that maybe 8 of the 24 kids in my ds's class actually live in the zone. [ Reply | More ]

based on my observations (applied for ds last year), you would be most comfortable at AS. Not familiar with Browning, so next on the list I would put St. B's, definitely traditional WASPY but a very intellectual/academic vibe, which appeals to many UWSers. I would tie St. D's (catholic) and Buckley with being the least comfortable. [ Reply | More ]

Browning has the reputation of being a very nurturing school. It's the only K-12 on your list (local high school placement can be harder for boys--traditionally boys went to boarding schools). I know some great kids there. [ Reply | More ]

It's a toughie (my DH also owns a few stations) but I think that the fact that most of our powerful signals are in the hands of a very small number of entities is very frightening. It came up a bit during the last election when a group of conservativ station owners all got together to play the "Swift Boat" movie and never gave the opportunity for rebuttal. The airwaves - which are ours - are no longer ours. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. i believe that most Americans do not go tomuch trouble to "learn". Sadly, they go to the easiest and most available always, and that is radio. It is free, in your car, in your home, wherever... The fact that it is entirely possible to turn the dial from one end tothe next and hear only one perspective is wrong and not good for any of us, no matter your perspective. [ Reply | More ]

I could agree with that but my problem is that who gets to decide what is too much of one side or the other? I'm libertarian so I guess I default to freedom in any issue. I worry about giving teh gov't too much power over things like this. That scares me far more than Rupert Murdoch ever could. Besides, nearly everyone has NPR too. That's some balance and if you really listen to the right wing guys, they aren't all saying the same things. They all vary somewhat. Keeps things interesting. I try to listen to all sides to figure out where the truth really is because both sides will out and out lie to you! [ Reply | More ]

NPR is one station. One underfunded station. Our gov't has given the power already to large conglomerates and media giants. All of the legislation in the last few years has been severly loosened to allow these groups to buy buy and buy and we are the ones who will pay the price. [ Reply | More ]

I think there are 2 issues here though. 1 is monopoly and what constitutes one. the other is free speech and how you define that. I thnk that NPR should be unfunded and let the people decide through advertising dollars etc, how much $$ it gets. There goes my libertarian side again though. I think eventually, it would probably improve the state of liberal talk radio. Why doesn't that succeed? Why did Air America fail? I don't get it. Seems like there are plenty of liberals out there. Why do they not want to support it? Maybe the get their news somewhere else? [ Reply | More ]

There are many issues, but Fairness doctrine is related to the monopoly issue. You wacky libertarians, you. You don't want to fund anything, but how do you think we got this intrenet ? and those roads you're driving on ? LOL! I'm not a totally wacky libertarian! I do think certain things should be funded. (roads can be included in that catagory!) But some things are just best left to the private sector. And I get it that the FD is related to the monopoly issue, but it is slightly diff since we are dealing with thoughts, words and ideas instead of widgets. Maybe you are right about the liberals. I will havet o give that some thought. But they are better at organizing things like marches and protests. Just try and get a bunch of conservatives out in the streets for anything! Good luck! They are pretty good at writing checks and letters to congresspeople however! ;-) [ Reply | More ]

yes although I'm reluctant to withhold dinner as a punishment (not reluctant to withhold dessert tho). boy would I be angry if my dd did that (which she undoubtedly will some day). your dd may be a bit old for this (she should know better) but I have a little plastic bear that I can attach to dd's shoe, and I keep the other part of it with a button that causes the bear to beep loudly if I press it. can't recall where I got it tho. you must have been beside yourself! I have never lost dc but it is one of my greatest fears in life! thank goodness you found her and she was okay. as far as punishment goes, you were the one who lost her but she does need to learn to stay near you. i think your punishment was really harsh but you are the mother so it's up to you. i would have used the time you punished her differently and taken away some other privilege but i'm sure your concern has had a significant impact on her. np: sorry but this is not OP's fault. Her dd ran off. Not like OP was wearing her on a chain and lost her. Her kid ran off. I also don't think she was harsh. I'm sure she will or may have talked to her about what went on but IMO the punishment fit the crime [ Reply | More ]

i never said that the punishment didn't fit the crime i simply said I would have handled it differently. everyone learned a lesson in this. set the rules before you attend an event like this. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I agree I should have reiterated the rules - although she is getting very old to still be doing this - I wonder what your punishment would be? Just trying to learn some different approaches. [ Reply | More ]

every time you have a negative thought about yourself, tell yourself 3 things you like about yourself. Then forget that poor idiot who gave your wonderful self up and be happy with the guy who actually loves and deserves you. [ Reply | More ]

that's a tough call. fake it till you make it is a good suggestion but i also really believe in therapy to find the source of your insecurities so that you can finally put them to rest. i often feel insecure about totally stupid things and some really important stuff. for me therapy is a very smart way of dealing with it all.
