A few weeks back I discussed my list of ongoing schools for application in the fall. You guys were really helpful (believe it or not)! A bunch of you suggested the boys schools -- Buckley, St. D's, St. B's, AS, Browning. I have some questions about them. First off, are the first three really as traditional and formal as they sound? Would a Jewish family, upper middle class from the UWS feel comfortable there? What about the last two? Just how religious are the two Sts. Any info appreciated. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You'd probably feel fine at ps 87, if you don't mind mixing with the not-so-upper middle class. [ Reply | More ]

Not in the PS 87 district. But thanks for the helpful feedback. [ Reply | More ]

Half the families at ps 87 are from out of the zone. [ Reply | More ]

It was in K this year. 60 families were officially from out of zone, and at least 20 others are faking the zone. That's out of 150. [ Reply | More ]

We are at the school, and it's probably a third at most. [ Reply | More ]

That's still a lot. But that was absolutely not true in K this year, and I don't know what it will be like next year. Of the figures above, the 60 is a fact, the 20 is an estimate. I think that maybe 8 of the 24 kids in my ds's class actually live in the zone. [ Reply | More ]

based on my observations (applied for ds last year), you would be most comfortable at AS. Not familiar with Browning, so next on the list I would put St. B's, definitely traditional WASPY but a very intellectual/academic vibe, which appeals to many UWSers. I would tie St. D's (catholic) and Buckley with being the least comfortable. [ Reply | More ]

If you are Jewish, why on earth would you send your kid to a Catholic school, and/or a school filled with WASPs? Why not find something with SOME diversity where he doesn't stick out like sore thumb? [ Reply | More ]

Jewish families are in the majority at many, if not most nyc privates, including many of the episcopal schools. catholic is not that different. [ Reply | More ]

So why pick a school like St.B's where the Jewish kid will be in the minority and there is very little diversity? Why not pick a school like Ethical Cultures or Trinity which pride themselves on diversity? [ Reply | More ]

i am a new responder but i think she is saying culturally it might be particulary a good fit for the family. I'm jewish but almost atheist but culturally i wouldn't want to be at a totally conservative -and i know im going to get slammed for this- waspy school [ Reply | More ]

Browning has the reputation of being a very nurturing school. It's the only K-12 on your list (local high school placement can be harder for boys--traditionally boys went to boarding schools). I know some great kids there. [ Reply | More ]

Jewish families would be comfortable at most of the boy's schools, but not St. D which is Catholic and not St. B's, which is over the top waspy (even my protestan friends there who are laid back are not socially comfortable there) [ Reply | More ]
