[ - ] Why is pragmatic language do darn hard for kids with speech delays? Anyone know what about that aspect in particular makes it hard? My DD has an incredible vocabulary (really extensive and hard words too), but still can't really use it all that functionally (e.g. she can't always answer simple questions or have that much of a back & forth conversation). 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

NP: My 5YO DS still has pragmatic speech issues. Truth is at 3YO he was not nearly as verbal as you say your DD is. But what speech he had was not very functional as well. But I tell you as he has aged and with therapy it has become so much better. As I said he still has difficulty and mostly being understood rather then his understanding of what people say. I'm told by everyone it will take time but most kids like that do get better. Also he just had a speech eval a couple of months ago and you know he tested great. I'm told also Pragmatic speech delay is difficult to test! [ Reply | More ]

NP: My DS had a great vocab, was not speech delayed, great articulation, but had pragmatic difficulties. Hard to answer simple questions, back and forth, but he was good at labeling, telling me what he wanted, etc. Even hard things. A little speech services and age, and he's improved DRAMATICALLY. Age 5 is totally different than age 4. GL. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. He sounds a lot like my DD. She is speech delayed (mild delay), but as I said - great vocab. She's also good at labeling, telling me what she wants, and asking or answering a few of the "WH" questions. But she too can't answer simple questions and the like. I'm hopeful after reading your post that with speech, and maturation, it will come. Fingers crossed. [ Reply | More ]

or: Yes, very high functioning and still is but has been having zone outs. I made the apt b/c of these zone outs. They are not sure they are seizures b/c they last 2 -4 hours one time it was 24 hours. His eye contact has regressed and language ... we're running tests next week EEG ect. It's common to have regression from seizures. [ Reply | More ]

During the time that my 3 yo was transitioning out of her nap it was really hellish. She was very sleep deprived. Either she would conk out at 6 pm and wake up at 10 pm for a few hours, or she would go right to bed at 730 pm and sleep until 5 or 530 am. Just do your best to keep a routine and avoid letting them nap late in the afternoon. Eventually, we settled into a 730 pm bedtime and my former early bird will sleep until 830 or 9 am. Unfortunately for me, I know have a 2 you who gets up at 545 am everyday. [ Reply | More ]
